I mentioned the rumors on the Internet and she again assured me that orders were being placed. Also let me buy as much of the 40 as I wanted (I left a few boxes).
Maybe Walmart has heard/felt the backlash and shifted their ill advised policy.

Walmart is no different than any other ammo seller in the fact that they have had a run on their supplies and can't get it in fast enough to keep up with the demand. I just purchased a couple of boxes of 9mm and a couple 100 round boxes of .22 early on Saturday, but the shelves were pretty bare and there was a line behind me for ammo.

steveincowtown wrote:In general, Walmart managers do not "order" anything. With that many SKUs, seasonal items, etc. it is all controlled by systems out of their headquarters.

How many SKU's are in a Walmart? Imagine if someone had to physically input an "order" for each one every week. It would never work!
you would be surprised, most retail stores have an inventory system with a base number that are in stock and a threshold for auto replenishment. but a lot of ordering is still do manually to anticipate and keep up with demand. a lot of times your minimum on hand is a lot lower then what you would actually like to have.

Eventually I think we'll get an answer one way or the other. I've been suspicious of Walmart because in my travels I've been stopping regularly at several stores and I've yet to find any evidence of restocking, while at the same time, I've seen restocking at Cabelas and Academy. And like others, I've also had clerks tell me they're not going to restock ammo anytime soon.

OTOH, I bought some 22 LR at a hardware store this weekend and asked the owner, in a slip of the tongue, if he could "order" more. He told me he could order all he wants but he can't get any. So, it's obvious that there are real shortages.

Went to the Academy on 183 near Oak Knoll in Austin and they are under strict rationing of one box per caliber. They had NO 9mm of any kind. :mad5

I haven't seen any 9mm on a shelf in a while. What I've gotten recently is what I've ordered from Cabela's online. It moves so fast, I don't think it matters if they are restocking or not.

The Academy in Mesquite had 900 rd tin of 9mm for $200. I assume steel cased military surplus.

They have been restocking in McKinney. Haven't seen 9mm, but .45 ACP, .40, .357, etc - I have seen it at multiple Walmarts

The store I work at tried to reorder some 22LR today. No luck. Our supplier said they currently have none. It may be several weeks before we get our little order. We have people coming in almost daily wanting 22. A month ago we sold maybe 2 boxes a week. A week or so ago one guy came in and bought all we had. And our prices aren't cheap either. Still have 2 boxes of Rem 22 Mag at almost $20 (ea). :???:

I haven't seen .22 LR in a Walmart this year. A little .22 win mag and .22 short, but no long rifle.

Last week I saw about 4 boxes of Winchester 22lr looked about 400rds
They had plenty of 45 and 9 and about 1k rounds of Tula 7.62x39

I wanted to clean them out but I was in a hurry and no one in sight. Checked the next day and it was a bare cabinet

I'd bet that any WalMart that sells ammo hears these questions at least 50 times a day. I'd also bet that they also get some people that are getting a little testy about this shortage. I'd also bet that many of the WalMart employees are getting tired of hearing these questions and have no real answers since they probably aren't being told anything by upper management and there's nothing they can do about it. Now, some of these WalMart employees are probably getting testy and telling some people that they are going to stop selling ammo to get them to stop coming in and asking questions.

If they respond, I will let you all know. I will also let them know my opinion of what they are doing. I think if they get enough people questioning the policy it will get changed before we get answers saying it is true.
Well, I have to say that I am disappointed in Walmart. I still have not heard an answer back from them.

I saw boxes being loaded into the cabinets today. Asked and the guy said that they are pretty much selling out of the small shipments they get other than the odd 22Mag and hunting calibers that everyone else also has on the shelves.... So best I can tell WM is just like everyone else.... getting what they can and it running out the door faster than they can get it into the cabinet. Just have to get there at the right time to see it happen.

I can tell you the other day I saw 12 boxes of 40 on the shelf. the guy was just walking away with the empty shipment boxes on his cart from unloading them. I took a 1/3 of them as did another guy right then. I suspect the other 1/3 didn't last much longer... at least I don't have to feel guilty dipping into ammo for the range now :-)
