I know they still have the veggie check just this side of Yuma to check for smuggling plants and vegetable matter into the state. That's a state gig. I know the BP have a westbound one out in the mountains that is sometimes manned and open, and the eastbound one just before you go down the mountain that is seldom open. Are there more?

Many years ago, we were down in San Felipe, Baja for a triathlon. On the way back, my buddy realized he had left his green card at home. He is a Kiwi. For nearly 100 miles, I had him practice saying "Howdy pahdner, Ah'm from Houston" like I did. At the border, they just looked in the car and waived us through. Probably a good thing because he couldn't have fooled Helen Keller with that accent.

It's been a few years since I have been out that way but CBP has an eastbound checkpoint in Texas. I've been through it half a dozen times and only had to stop once. And that was because the agents wanted to talk to a truck in front of me. All other times it was a rolling encounter and waved through.

In my opinion, any type of behavior which presents the subject as confrontational,in a child like manner, does far more harm than good. To undo a lot of the damage over the years, we must convince the vast majority that we are exceptional citizens. Texas CHL holders do exactly that with the data to prove it. We are well behaved sheep dogs who ( if we individually choose) pose an additional layer of protection from the wolves.

Whenever someone presents themselves as overly aggressive or confrontational, in the eyes of many, we all get painted with a broad brush. Its not good to upset the sheep as the farmer will have no use for you.

Since Texas CHL holders conduct themselves as upsatanding citizens and most sheep never know we're armed, no problem.

Besides, isn't that the kind of behavior you're supposed to refrain from when you have a CHL? (instigating, or attempting to escalate a situation)

This story shows a responsible way of exercising ones rights without being a total jerk and waiting LEO time and resources.
