That's in line with my thinking. My church (as many other churches I visit) have a main sanctuary/auditorium for general services and separate buildings/rooms for the Children's Sunday School. However, these buildings and rooms are not used solely for the Children. They are used for meetings, conferences, and other ministry related functions.

Dusting off this thread with a specific location/related question....

I'm going to a play tomorrow night that will take place at a "Learning Center" for home schooling. The place does have classrooms and conduct grade level classes in a variety of subjects (Chemistry, Geometry, etc.) for K through 12, but it's done not as a complete course of study, rather as a way for parents of home school kids to give their kids instruction in topics that the parent does not have expertise... or perhaps as a way to let home school kids have some "classroom" interactions for social and other reasons.

if it matters, the participants in the play pay to enroll in their theater workshop. Some (many?) of the kids in the show are regular public school students and are otherwise not affiliated with homeschooling or this "learning center" in a student capacity.

I don't see any reference to TEA accreditation... (TEA specifically says they have "no regulatory authority over home schooling") and I don't see mention of the place being posted on Texas3006.

Don't see them listed in the TEA Private Accreditation list for Tarrant County. But that info and $5 will buy you a small coffee at Starbucks.

I would think it would be a no go.

Sec. 46.03. PLACES WEAPONS PROHIBITED. (a) A person commits an offense if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, club, or prohibited weapon listed in Section 46.05(a):

(1) on the physical premises of a school or educational institution, any grounds or building on which an activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or educational institution, whether the school or educational institution is public or private, unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the institution;

I could argue it isn't a school, but it certainly seems like it would fall into the broad category of an "educational institution."


Speaking of which, that would be a GREAT clean up bill for next session. Go back and define EXACTLY what a school/educational institution.

it's not an 'educational institution' the TEA has absolutely no control over homeschooling. just because a few of the kids are government schooled that doesn't matter. Basically, treat this as a 'club' meeting, and don't worry about it.

What if a church or other groups rents space in a public school building on weekends, as happens quite a lot in my area?

nope, can't carry in a school, even if school is out, which is stupid, but it's the law as it stands right now.

Like Keith, I've generally associated "school" and "accredited" (TEA), but "Homeschool Learning Center" threw me for a loop.

Went and enjoyed the show. No 30.06 and after poking around a bit, I could not find anything that resembled a classroom, so, my pants fit correctly through the whole show without having to adjust my belt.
