Well I ordered a NRA concealed carry 5.11 vest and it will take of my needs if i want to wear OWB or IWB or in the vest pockets. People can draw whatever conclusions they want, it's affordable and covers completely, and it wont be that hot in summer  john

I use Cabela's brand Serengeti Safari Shirts for cover both in winter and summer. They are made of cotton canvas with a square cut bottom and come in both a long and short sleeved version.
I have used them for over five years and have never had anyone notice my carry gun. FYI… I carry a Commander sized 1911 in a Comp-Tac CTAC IWB holster.

I recently purchased some Eddie Bauer Boot Cut jeans. They easily conceal my S&W 442 in the ankle glove while wearing boots.

I am new here and just read throug the thread. I must agree with tex45acp. The Dickies shirts with small plad (sp) are perfect for a larger guy to conceal a full sized weapon (H&K USP .45). Works well for me. As for Vests - A big guy in a vest in the Texas summer heat? Packing!!!

I am 6'2" 240 with dunlopped syndrome. The only way I've found that works for me is OWB, so I guess it is a vest or my mouse gun PPK/S in my pocket. When I go out in the texas heat, and I start sweating real bad I'll just start thinking about all of our men and women over in the deserts of the middle east doing their jobs without a whimper, I'll just say an extra prayer for them, and I probably wont feel so bad.

For guys that wear vests in the summertime, have you considered wearing a lightweight nylon moisture wicking type shirt as the base layer?

Yes I wear a medalist wicking t-shirt , works very good. The vest isn't the only thing I wear, but I really like the pockets for water bottles and everything else I want to carry. Thanks for not criticizing the vest, we all are different and we like what we like.

For summer:

Khaki shorts, OWB holster (Kimber Ultra Carry), and a T-shirt. GUN BELT!

Kind of prints....keep your elbow tucked into your side and no worries.

If I'm feeling to lazy to block with my arm I'll throw on a button up shortsleeve and button a couple of middle buttons (less buttons = less fabric tight against the gun).

JB3, you are new but have hit on one of the really great things about this forum. Everybody likes what they like & it is different w/ some than others. You should have seen that for sure no one critisizes the other. Got to be one of the reasons that it does so good. There is a real need in todays world for a positive place to go. HERE IT IS FOLKS. BTW I wear vests too. OH yea & suspenders too. still get no :smilelol5:

My latest "evaluation" consists of a gray BDU jacket with the sleeves meticulously removed (so as not to fray). So far so good but I may need to go up a size. I chose gray as black would be too hot (summer is fast approaching). I hate the color khaki but may experiment with it when the temperature starts rising.

When looking for the jacket, I insisted that I must get 100% cotton. I feel now that it is probably unnecessary since sweat would more than likely never make it to the "vest". Plus, it wrinkles up pretty quick. The next one I get will be one of the poly/cotton blends (what I wore in the service). Wrinkling isn't much of an issue.

Based upon your recommendation, I ordered two to give them a try. They're great for concealed carry! I'm going to order more in different colors. They have three different colors on sale now; $14.95 for regular and $16.95 for tall. Other colors are at the regular price of $27.95 to $29.95.

Thanks for the tip,
Chas.

Columbia and Magellen shirts

Post by JB3 »

On the recommendations of Anygun and Bubba, I went to Academy last weekend and checked out the shirts. I ended up buying two Magellan and two Columbia shirts, they work great. This forum sure has a lot of experience posting here and it saves one "new to carrying" a lot of expense and errors in finding what works and what doesnt work Thanks

You are quite welcome. Glad you like the shirts. You have seen me wear them at Top Gun on Tuesday nights.

I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to add an inexpensive item that works very well for me.

I already wear the Dickies plaid shirts that were mentioned earlier, but I prefer having two shirt pockets so I can keep my wallet in one.

This keeps me from having to raise my cover garment to get my wallet. Plus it's a whole lot more comfortable for those drives from Corpus Christi to Carlsbad (or wherever else my job takes me, seldom less than an 8 hour drive).

So I found that some WalMart stores carry short-sleeve Dickies work shirts in different colors. These shirts have two pockets, with button-down flaps, and a slot for a pen on the left pocket.

They're solid colored, but the material is thick enough that they don't print with a quality concealment rig. They cost all of $15 each, and you can try 'em on to see what size works best for you.

Here are pics of mine with a G22 underneath.

I also wear the plaid Dickies shirts sometimes, and the straight hemmed "George" brand shirts that WalMart sells for about $15. They look a lot better for "casually dressy" occasions. I also have several tropical print shirts and some Magellan and Bimini Bay shirts.

I wear the Under Armour under these shirts. There is a tactical version available with a V-neck, so it isn't visible when you leave the top button undone. Free shipping at Goldmanbros if you buy enough.
