Using it to buy a gun makes sense - shortens the entire process, at least in Texas

I've used it to vote and buy guns. Not sure why some places would require a DL considering your CHL shows your DL number. I have handed it to people by mistake (carry DL,CHL & Passport Card in same wallet pocket) and have used all three when voting. ID is ID, I don't consider it a big whoopee one way or another.

This comes back to the discussion of having CHL stamped on your drivers license. If you want to use your CHL as an ID, why not have it stamped on your DL? Texas law is that a person must carry their CHL and a valid ID when carrying, and if not carrying they do not need to carry the CHL.

What is it with people wanting to use their CHL as ID. Is it that they want to impress other people that they are authorized to carry a firearm? Is it some sort of swagger stick?

I personally would rather use my DL as ID. The less some people know about me, the better I like it.

I carry as little as possible in my wallet. Right now I have my DL, CHL, work ID, health ins. card, ATM/debit card, one credit card and a twenty dollar bill in my wallet, that's it. I have never used my CHL as "primary" ID on purpose. (I have accidentally given it instead of DL a couple times). But, I also personally have no problem with anyone using their CHL as ID. To each his own. I don't think anyone shows it to say "look at me, I carry" or anything, it's just a convenience thing in my opinion. As stated before, I personally don't use it except as maybe a second form when possible, but I am not going to jump on anyone that does. As far as people knowing I have a CHL, 99% of the people that know me, know I have a CHL and I carry whenever I legally can (except at work, but that's a whole other topic). I don't go around waving banners saying I have my CHL, but through discussions at work and with family and friends it comes up and usually about how they too can get theirs. :tiphat:

I've used mine as a second ID when setting up a business checking account. The bank I was with at the time wanted two photo IDs. I gave them the ONLY two photo IDs I had - my TDL and CHL. The hotel I stayed at in California last December wanted two forms of ID. I handed the clerk my little folded ID holder with both cards in it. You should have seen his eyes get big; and then he said, "I wish we could do that here in California", and that was the final word. I wished it for him too.

My Bank has no problem with a CHL holders going through the Drive in Teller ....Just cant take it in lobby.
I used it to pay Property Taxes.
Time to change banks!

My bank told me face to face they accept a CHL as primary ID. And yes I carry inside, discretely of course. :txflag:

When I'm asked to show ID and I give a DL, it's not like I'm thinking "Oh, look at me, I'm special...I can drive a car!!!"

Why would it be any different with CHL? There is a utility in the fact you can use CHL if needed for primary or secondary ID.

Other than for their own amusement?
1) They might not have a choice if some place wants a 2nd photo ID.
2) Some places give CHL holders discounts (or so I'm told).
3) It lets you skip the background check when buying a gun.

I know a sweet lady who doesn't drive a car, so she uses her CHL as a government ID since she has no driver's license. When she needs 2 forms of government ID, she uses a passport, too. One time, I was with her and the postal employee said that she couldn't use her CHL as an ID to pick up a package. She asked the postal worker what is accepted. The postal worker said, "driver's license, passport, or armed services ID."

My friend, she said, "doesn't a CHL count as an armed service? I mean, whatever script you're reading from doesn't say military service, right?"

The postal worker grunted and took her CHL so that he could look at it and identify her as the owner of the package.

:coolgleamA:

P.S. Very interesting lady. She is blind, so she cannot drive, but she does have a CHL AND she passed her shooting test. The secret is that her target is not paper but solid hardwood. She clicks her tongue and listens for the echo to "see" the target. She aims, then the instructor puts the headset on her for hearing protection and she fires a couple shots. The instructor then removes her headset, she clicks her tongue a couple times, then the headset goes on again and she fires some more. She had to rent the entire gun range so it can be quiet enough for her to hear the echoes of her tongue clicking. It took her several tries, but she passed!

She lives out in the country and plans on using a .22 LR revolver as her CCW on her own property. She doesn't plan on carrying the weapon off her own property, so she got the CHL mainly as an ID. She chose the .22 LR revolver because she didn't want any hearing damage in case she had to use the weapon. Her hearing is how she "sees".

P.P.S. Using echolocation used to be very rare in blind people, but after these youtube videos came out, blind people everywhere found out that it is possible, so, now, lots of blind people have learned to use echolocation, at least to some extent. Not everyone who is blind that learned echolocation can ride a bicycle, but this skill can help blind people do more without having eyes. It is another tool that blind people can use to interact with their environment more successfully without ocular vision.

Change to a .22 auto and she sounds like a prime candidate for a silencer.

There's room in my wallet for both, and I don't think the clerk at the liquor store needs to know I'm carrying.
