Buying them was banned, but existing ones were grandfathered. Now mere possession is banned.

And like everyone has already said the bad guys will still have their guns that are now under the ban , i really do not for the life of me see how anyone with half a brain would think this would stop anymore gun crimes than the currant laws do . I have two cousins that live in CA and i dont even think of them as familey anymore because of the way they think.
