All the men took turns filling the grave and sitting with her as she cried and held Nate . At the end they put up a beautiful cedar cross with the name ..Hosea..carved in it . The grave was tidied up of loose dirt . They all walked to the cabin , Sam leading the team . Hosea was put to rest .

She awoke the next morning . She was tired , she was rethinking all that had happened yesterday . It had been a hard day . She dressed and kindled a fire from banked coals under the ashes in the fireplace . She stirred the cornmeal with plums and sugar then putting it on the coals after breaking the two logs up that had burned down . She made the coffee and set it to the side in the fireplace to boil .
She was trying to put her mind in order thinking , her hands did the work by themselves . The men had worked so hard yesterday to serve her and help her . She sliced the bacon and put in in a frying pan set to the side waiting for the coffee to be ready .
The breakfast was made and she sat drinking a cup of coffee as the men came in , she got up and put the food on the table as Zeke and Wade got plates and cups . They all talked and ate then Wade stood up and said ...Our brother Zeke seeks baptism and he has requested that I baptize him . It will be done at the river this evening . Everyone congratulated Zeke on his decision . Sam said ...Brother Wade it has been on my mind for a good while ...I would like to recommit my life to the Lord . I have been Baptized but seek to be rebaptized to recommit and start anew . I would like to make a profession of faith and be baptized with my brother Zeke .
Wade said ...Praise GOD !

They all left in a good humor to work , she was washing dishes and cleaning up . She banked coals and tended Nate , dirty laundry was piling up , she would wash her new dress to wear again for this evening ...so much to do .
Then she heard the men talking and commotion outside . She looked out and they had the sledge on the black mule with shelfs and a work counter loaded on it . Zeke said ...Tell us where you want all this and we will move it in . She was dumbfounded for a moment then said ...Bring the sets of shelfs first then we will figure exactly where to put the work counter ! She was smiling .
Then she heard the men talking and commotion outside . She looked out and they had the sledge on the black mule with shelfs and a work counter loaded on it . Zeke said ...Tell us where you want all this and we will move it in . She was dumbfounded for a moment then said ...Bring the sets of shelfs first then we will figure exactly where to put the work counter ! She was smiling .

They set up the shelves and leveled the counter with shelves under it and she was putting all the dishes , pots and pans , bowls , spices , food stuff , flour sacks and...…..
She was busy ! Zeke told Wade on the way out ...She needs to be busy right now , we need to keep her busy for a while . They made one more trip to the shed and brought back the rest of the supplies the Rangers had brought from Eliasville . They carried in two bolts of denim material for work clothes , an assortment of heavy material for dresses , a smoked ham , extra cartridges for the Spencer and Henry , a used sixteen gage double barrel cap lock shotgun , five pounds of seven and a half shot , five pounds of four shot , one twenty five pound bag of flour , five pounds of rolled oats and more .
She was filling the shelves and two shelves under the counter saying ...Oh ! All my space will be taken up ! I have never had so much ! She hugged them all and thanked them as they went to finish chores . Zeke told them on the way to the shed ...See there ! Told you she would be happy ! She washed her good dress and petticoat planning on wearing them in the evening to the river . She checked the six hens , she got another five eggs giving them a talking to that one of them was a slacker and better get busy or they would be having fried chicken ! The pup was watching the hens and she said ...Don't ever hurt my hens ...shaking a finger at him ! He ran back to the cabin .
The men were putting up the rail fence for the new stock pen and building two gates for it . They were working , building and happy . Zeke was laughing a lot , she knew getting baptized was the reason because he had wanted it for a long time .

She asked Zeke if he could get her some greens and of coarse he said yes . He got two sacks and saddled the black mule . He checked the place by the plum thicket and the lambs quarter was all wilted or dead . The heat had got to it .
He found plenty of Polk on the tree line of the river and filled a sack . He went to the spot he had gotten the cattail shoots and there were plenty still there . He took off his pants and boots , he waded out and started gathering them . He saw something floating on the eddy side of the cattails and was curious . He pulled it out of the water and it was Wade's cavalry hat that Wade lost crossing the river chasing Bud . Zeke thought a moment about giving it back to wade but he pitched it out in the middle of the river . It rolled over two or three times and disappeared under the slow current . Wade didn't need that old memory to Zeke's way of thinking .
Zeke rode back with enough greens for three or four days and she was happy .

She experimented and made a big meat pie from the dried venison . It looked pretty , the crust was browned and the meat tender . She made Polk greens in her big pot , there would be enough greens for two days . The blue eyed pup got some dried meat and was happy .
The men came in hungry for lunch and ate the whole meat pie with greens and tea . They were nearly through with the pen except for hanging the gates . They planned on gathering the corn tomorrow ….That was going to be a hard hot job .

They went out to get everything ready to harvest the corn . Zeke had noticed deer were getting in the corn on the south side of the cornfield closer to the river . Zeke had started putting the clean old hay in the huge corn crib inside the livestock shed to unload the new shucked corn on . Needed to finish that and haul all the old hay out on the prairie to get rid of it .
Zeke got out the two cane knives , the husking hook gloves , they put the picket sides on the sledge to haul stalks off . They moved all the stock into the new pen to be able to leave the gate open and back the wagon into the shed and unload the corn into the crib .

They took two willow poles and put them up on the offside of the wagon bed ends to stretch the wagon sheet on to catch corn when they were throwing it behind them over their shoulder so it would fall in the bed . Wade said he had never used a husking glove or harvested corn so he would use the sledge and follow the huskers cutting stalks and loading them on the sledge to haul off . Sam , Captain Jack and Zeke could trade out driving the wagon to take a break .
Zeke put Sam and Wade building a table to mount the corn sheller and grinding mill on for the future . She had said Hosea and her had set the sheller on the wagon gate last year to shell corn but a table the right height would be much better and handy in the future .

She was arranging all the supplies , Zeke had spent a LOT of money on them even if the couple that owned the store let them have everything at cost . She felt bad she had no money to help pay for all this much supplies , she had only two dollars and some change from moving here . Hosea had done an amazing job of buying everything at a good price and getting all the tools , equipment and things they needed but after a year on the trail living buying what they needed they had less than ten dollars when they got here . She needed to figure out how to make some money .

It was a few hours till they would go to the river so she bathed Nate and herself . She put on her new blue dress with a petticoat and wore her Sunday bonnet again . After today she would put up her good clothes . She had dress material now and denim to make the men work clothes and she would make herself a denim jumper to save her dresses . She knew Wade and Zeke needed new socks too . She was so glad to have material to work with . There was a whole box of graduated color big spools of thread and it had a needle assortment .
Wade's pants were worn out , she would measure him first to make some clothes . She was cooking a pot of beans with ham and dried meat and it would be done before they left to go to the river . She mixed up some cornbread and put it on the pothook in the fireplace and using the small coal shovel put a small amount of coals on the lid with the beans simmering off to the side .
