Still waiting. Who has the longest wait so far? I submitted application September 8, 2008. After 4 months wrote the Governor's office, said they would look into it. I got a call from DPS about all the backlog and hurricane bull. Last month I wrote to Rep. Dennis Bonnen His office e-mailed that they would contact DPS to see what they could do. DPS calls me and says they are waiting on one background check, and they will try to expedite it, that was a month ago. I live in Alvin, TX. It is 7 months from the time they started the "processing application".

I got it, March 25!!!!

Here is an update not much to update but here it is.....
As of now I am not waiting for my license but waiting to see what kind of letter they are going to send me stating that I left out something or missed a document. I guess I will have to wait to find out.......

Call DPS and tell them. The number should be on the letter. They can straighten out the error before it causes problems.

They can verify your name, address, etc., from your driver license record.

DPS recieved my packet on jan 13 and my application is still in processing when I check it online, so I called and they said my app had been sent to a technitian for further review. Has anyone ever heard of this or is it just another stall reason?

I'm into 70 days now waiting on renewal, my question is how many clerks do they have, how many applications have they received in last 6 months,how low of a priority do they consider the CHL application and this is where I believe the problem exist, just an opinion after working 40+ years but I expect management has the CHL at the bottom of allotted manpower hours, would be good to know.

it does not seem like that long for me i dont remember when i shiped it off
i got my pin feb 23rd
then about two weeks after that i got my photo back cause i forgot to get it signed.
we got it signed and shiped back off.
checked the site today and it says completed and what not so waiting on it to come in

I don't know the exact answers to those questions -- the information is not published. But the House Law Enforcement Committee held hearings a year ago on why CHL applications were being processed more slowly than statute prescribed. It came out that there are about 50 DPS employees in Austin who work solely on CHL applications, and they receive over 8,000 applications a month.

Rumor has it that the number increased sharply after November 4, for some reason that no one has been able to figure out.

The biggest hangup seems to be county-level background checks. Each applicant has one county background check for every county where the applicant has lived or worked for the past five years. They are performed by DPS troopers who are not dedicated full-time to that function.

The biggest bottleneck is Harris County, because of the large number of applicants who live or work there. They also blamed the slowdown on the affects of Hurricane Ike there.

I took class and mailed things in on6/10/08 and received license on 1/12/09. Talk about waiting.

I'm usually the best at procrastinating. After returning from a hunting trip in mid November 2007, I decided to take the course. It took until the first part of February 2008 for my CHL to arrive. My wife just filled out the online portion and received her packet from the state last week. She is talking about going to complete the course next month. Maybe she will receive her CHL by Christmas 2009... maybe...

I love that they give you the top secret PIN and you have to put in all this top secret information for them to tell you...

I mailed mine 1/19/2009. And by the way, for CHL, Charles Cotton is the man.

As of today, the website says..."Processing Application". The same thing it's said since I got my PIN....

Based on Mr. Cotton's estimate, I'd say I don't have to check the mail hard for it until June-August.

WOOOHOOO! My wife got her plastic!

She took the class on January 24th, sent in her paperwork on the 26th, and got her plastic today - 74 days after the day she mailed in her stuff. Now she's got to look at girlie ways of carrying a G19. Hey Crossfire, if you see this and have any suggestions, let me know!

Interestingly, her card has a new design which doesn't look anything like mine.

Interesting..... assuming we have 20 work days a month and 40 DPS employees along with 12 temps working on applications, as stated in the above link, and taking into account that I'm not as smart as those people in Austin , that averages out to between 7-8 applications a day per person. Seems pretty simple to me..... establish the average employee time it takes to process an application and assign the proper manpower.

Now I figured that out in about 5 minutes. I see the meeting in that link was done a year ago. A YEAR AGO? Wow, they must really be working hard on the solution.
