Just put it in the air.
Seriously, as long as you don't wrap it around powerlines or something, there's not really a wrong way to put that antenna up. What do you have to work with in terms of supports and area?

When I had one, I had it "bent" around a couple of corners and it still worked pretty good, well enough, as a matter of fact, that I carried on a weekly sked with a ham in New Zealand with it.

I have some great trees to hang it from but the distance to the trees from my radio is what is worrying me.

Actually, you need quite a bit of line between the radio and the G5RV for them to function properly. The twin-lead should be stretched out. There is not a lot of loss in coax on HF frequencies, so don't be worried about that part if you used decent RG-8 at least. How far is the run?

well, I admit I bought a Yaesu 7r last week since I'm turning into a nutty survivalist.
I bought one more as a "end of the world" emergency device. I obviously never touch the transmit button, since I do not have a license. My dad has been licensed almost 60 years. I am thinking about sitting for the technicians license.

If you don't get the license, you won't get the practice that you'll need for an emergency.
Once you get it, talk to the other hams in your area about doing some public service communications. Nothing teaches you what you'll need to do in an emergency quite like getting out there and trying it.
