It was a joke, Purple. I spent six years in the Army, though I was mechanized infantry (11-H) and not technically a ground pounder. I have great respect for the Marines but do like to poke the interservice rivalry with a stick now and then.

To be honest, if I had it all to do over again, I'd go Marines over the Army. My uncle served as a Marine in Vietnam (3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with V device) and another 26 in the Army (his last duty station was Mosul, Iraq). He identifies himself as a Marine first, even though he also proudly wears his 1st ID patch. I know full well the brotherhood Marines enjoy.

My "great-nephew" just called me, and told me he just swore in to the Marine Corp!!! I am absolutely proud of him...

And you guys in the know...He's not going to any specialty field, just straight infantry...I about flipped a gasket!!!

He asked me if he could come over and start getting familiar with the M4...So sure I'll let him go send a few downrange so he's not completely surprised by the weapon...

But I asked him and he surprised me even more, that I was his inspiration to sign up...Even though I was Navy, he wants to be the pointed end of the sword...Again, I am more than just proud of him...

And what is just as important, he called me first to tell me he did this...He hadn't at the time told his Mom...But I told him he better get that done before the sun goes down...

He want to get good enough to graduate from Basic with the "expert" rating, befoer heading out to Andvanced Infantry Training up the road from MCRD San Diego...

I may have been Navy, but I know some of what those guys do across the "moat" from NTC San Diego...

If I have to hitch-hike to California next April for his graduation I will!!!

And as far as this thread goes, I have not asked him if he has been asked the question we are wondering about...Not going to bog him down with this issue...He needs to focus and be ready to hit the ground running in January when he ships out...

You know, I am actually jealous...I wish I was 25 years younger, knowing what I know now...You could not keep me out now...

Hmm, back in the day ground pounders were ground pounders, whether you rode the metal beast, a truck, or walked to the fight.

Anti-armor infantry. I rode and fought in a M901 (basically, an M113 with a TOW2 on top). The true ground pounders in my book were the 11-B guys, though we all have the blue rope.

All this chest-thumping about being a grunt is hilarious.
I remember when I was 17 years old and sitting in the Recruiters Office. He asked me, "what do you want to do in the Marines?". I looked at him all confused and answered, "I thought all that Marines did was run up on the beach and kill people?". He laughed and pulled out a brochure full of jobs, which kind of blew my mind. Apparently I had good ASVAB scores and he would get more points for enlisting me in a job program. I didn't figure all this out till years later when I too was a Recruiter.

I thought everyone has good ASVAB scores?

At least every single one of my friends who's been recruited has been told that....

Having been a Recruiter myself, the short answer is "No".

That just most likely means that you don't have any unintelligent friends. ASVAB scores actually have a rough correlation with IQ.

Trust me, there are a lot of stupid people in the millitary. I've even had the misfortune of working for some of them.

Anyway...My G. Nephew invited me to meet his recruiter...Guy's a solid 4.0 Marine (Gunny Sgt.)...

While the Jr. Recruiters ran the "pre-boots" around, we sat down and droped a few names and places on the map...Good stuff to talk about in my opinion...

The discussion got around to certain questions...I did not insinuate anything or drive this discussion, I simply showed him this thread, and he was livid...Not at any of us, or the discussion so far...He wants to know who asked this, and where...I guess we can assume this was solidly in the bunk catagory (no fault of the OP), and not anything more than a misunderstanding, if that...

Guess we are still in a holding pattern...

You know you have good ASVAB scores when they hand you the book and tell you to pick anything. If they start crossing anything out your score might not have been that good.

That is what my Recruiter did. I handed it back to him and told him to pick as I just wanted to be a Marine.
