Whether you take the abbreviated class or the regular one, I don't think you will find the time to be wasted. The longer class is covering the instructor training, but it is still very good info IMO. There is only one abbreviated class offered a year, but June will have both the abbreviated class and a regular class if I remember a comment made on it at one point correctly. There are currently approx 500 people waiting to attend a class. When they are licensed, there will be close to 3000 instructors licensed in Texas.
This is a top notch program presented by people who are obviously dedicated and passionate about our second amendment rights and protecting the CHL program. They were tireless in answering questions even during breaks. A huge concern is that our instructors need to be focused on teaching people how to
stay out of trouble. We do not have enough case law to cement a uniform favorable interpretation of the CHL laws. This means if we get a tragedy that ends up on the front page of the papers, the media will have a field day, and it could dramatically influence how judges and district attorneys choose to enforce our laws. It also means our students may get in trouble for something in one county that is ignored in another currently. We all have a heavy responsibility to be team players in preventing that whatever our personal feelings are about signs, etc.
Best wishes to all who are headed into the Summer class or waiting to be scheduled. Please be patient. I can tell you they are working very hard to get all of you through and it is not as simple to do that as it looks before you go through one and see what is on their plates. Class size affects the quality of the learning and they want every single instructor to leave with the knowledge and tools they need.
You will hear they are very very interested in complaints from CHL holders that their instructor did not spend the required 10 hour minimum, tried to sell range services during that time, were unsafe, gave legal advice, showed too many unrelated videos, gave too many "opinions", tried to sell legal coverage during class, etc. We can all expect them to followup on those complaints with more investigation than in the past.
On a last note: If you are in an upcoming class. I can recommend the Comfort Suites in Georgetown. It's close to the classrooms, quiet, comfortable, and gun friendly. Every person there was unfailingly cheerful, and my room was nice and clean. The complementary breakfast was good too. Ask for the DPS rate which was almost half of the regular fee. Just let them know you are attending the DPS CHL class.
Oh, and I'm not a lawyer and this was not legal advice in any form
