A few years ago, I gave my son an M1A for Christmas. But I also bought a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. On Christmas morning I asked him if he had room in his safe for another one, and I handed him the wrapped up BB gun. He opened it, chuckled a bit, and set it aside to open another gift. So then I asked him to check to see what that box behind my bedroom door had in it. The look on his face as he unwrapped the M1A was priceless. But he has shot that BB gun more lately than the M1A, the ammo situation being what it is.

Actually, my wife found a dead one in the back yard...and one in the neighbors yard. Some young punk must be doing some of this under the cover of dark. I can only assume that his pellet gun is being used as an instrument of death. Shameful really.

Back in the early 90's, my dad gave me Smith 4006 as a Thanksgiving present. I was one of very few college kids that carried in their vehicle.

I have two air rifles that I bought recently. One is a surprisingly accurate BB gun: the Daisy Avanti Champion 499. It claims to be the most accurate BB gun in the world. From my experience with it, I don't doubt the claim. I use it mostly for indoor target shooting. I have a pellet trap that works well on BBs.

My other rifle is a Gamo Whisper Silent Stalker. In my opinion, Gamo makes lower-end rifles, but they are okay, if accuracy is not a major concern. They are good for dispatching snakes and varmints.

For outdoor target shooting, I am looking at the Air Arms TX 200, a Beeman, or a Walther. I haven't yet decided, but rifles like them get kind of expensive. With so many good rifles available, it is a tough choice.

I don't have to decide quickly because I'm having so much fun with my Avanti Champion BB gun. The Champion is designed for accuracy at 5 meters (16.4 feet), although it is just as accurate at 20 and 25 feet. At 16 and 20 feet, I routinely group 5 or 10 shots within size of a dime. That's indoors, so there is no wind. But I'm amazed that a BB gun can be so consistent. Even at 30 feet, the BBs start to drop a little, but consistensy is still there.
