Handgun safety is mandated. In fact, these are the required topics;
(1) the laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly
force;
(2) handgun use, proficiency, and
safety;
(3) nonviolent dispute resolution; and
(4)
proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on
storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury
to a child.

TXI,
As I recall from my class, there was more emphasis on items 1, 3, and 4 than on 2. The safety discussion was pretty brief. I don't recall anything more than passing comments on proficiency.
I don't mean to sound critical, because I learned a lot in the class. I just think the safety part could be expanded, and in particular have some practical safety training. For example, showing how to tell if a handgun (revolver or semi-auto) is loaded, and how to unload and load each type.

Agreed. It SHOULD be covered adequately. <did I spell that correctly?
Sounds like an instructor issue.

I am thankful that safety issue is covered very well By Britt Gipson in Apple Springs, where I go. He is very animated during the class & every use of firearms also demonstrates safety aspect. Before the range sellion there is about 20-30 minute safety instruction covering:
When you pick it up.
When you are shooting on the range.
When you are in combat & moving w/ a loaded gun.
He is close to me but worth the drive if you need a good one.

And I think that's the reason that the person I mentioned a few posts back was failed, she had little or no idea how to handle her gun at all, much less safely.
I have no idea if she passed on her next try.
