You can use language to create distance. Asking them "could you stay right there?" , rather that getting interogitory with them. Then you can escalate to telling them to "stop right there!".

I suggest direct verbal engagement. Predators expect their intended prey to be wary. They don't expect their mark to burst out with, "Yo, man, you got a dollar? I need to pay for this gas!"

Yep, that may reset their OODA loop. It may not stop encroachment, though.
