I personally keep at least 500rds .223, 1000+ 7.62x39, 500-1000 9mm, 250-500 .308, and even a sealed can of 7.62x51R. I also rent a room in my house to a fellow gun nut with his own stash of weapons and ammo. He has usually less weapons and more ammo than me at any given time. You can never have enough ammo especially in this day and age. Whether it be Z-Day, invasion of terrorists, civil unrest or a prairie dog invasion I am ready to go without a doubt. Keep buying and keep shooting.

Cheaper than Dirt would be the LAST place I would look for ammo. Their prices are insane. $300/500 rounds of Federal XM193 is flat out gouging. I even saw one of their ads the other day for 1k rounds of M855 for....drum roll please........$1,179.00 + shipping.

I bet your right. There are many folks panic stricken about the future availability of ammo and guns. I listened to a guy in the gun shop the other day proclaim he wanted to buy a gun for under 400 bucks. He didn't care which gun. Any gun they had for under 400 bucks. I couldn't believe my ears. The guy went on to say he had never owned a gun and wanted to get one before Obama outlawed them all.
What worries me now is that ammo and gun dealers have found out that they can sell their products for a lot more than they once thought they could. I fear prices will be a long time in coming down.

There's a little gun shop down the road from me. In July, I was looking at one of their AR15's that was used, and at a good price. ($699).
I went into the same shop about a month ago and saw the rifle, still sitting right where I left it, only now the price was $1,299.

I told the owner what I thought about his business practices and he didn't even blink. I'll never go back in that store.

Ammunition To Go has the same stuff for $799.99 savings of about .32 per round! Better take advantage of a "Free Market" while you can!

Your kidding...aren't you??? A good old fashion skinning looks good compared to a tar and feathering? If ammo get's much higher I am going to start selling my personal stash. I wish my stock picks had the same returns as my ammo fort.
I'm going to borrow a saying they taught my kids when they were in school in the mid to late 80's. Just say no

Howdy,
The thread title is "How many 223 rounds is enough?" but the links to sellers are for M855 5.56 nato ammunition.
Weapons chambered in .223 SAMMI spec should not fire 5.56 nato.
Common 5.56 chamber pressures can exceed SAMMI max by more than 10% ( 62,336 psi for 5.56 55,000 psi .223 ) This increase in pressure will result in increased wear in the .223 weapon as well as reliability issues.
Headspace length and throat angle vary enough between the two chambers to create cycling problems and potential projectile jams.
Telltales for 5.56 in .223 chamber, flattened and or stained primers, cycle/double feed, FTE, primers seperate from case(I watched one young fellow shake 5 loose primers from his mag and lower after an FTF at the range) loss of accuracy at known distance.
Check your barrel stamp to be sure that you have a 5.56 chamber before using 5.56!
Be Safe!

I try to keep 2k in each of the rounds of each caliber, including .223, in "stash". I keep a case, more or less, on the available shelf to grab when we go to shoot.
As HV said (paraphrased that is...) , if you have room for more, you don't have enough

Just wow.
Hope you're not my neighbor in a bad situation. Good to know you're advocating shooting people and stealing their guns though. Healthy mentality.
As for how many, I like to have enough that I could go shooting at the range at least once a month for 6 months without running out. That way, if there is a shortage, I can hopefully weather it and still continue to practice.
Other than that, its kind of like what car you drive. I don't care, its your car.
