I think if you are of a certain age (I'm 60) then you are smart enough not to get involved with these online communities. I got an invite to join someone's face book page that I hadn't seen or heard of since 6th grade. There was a reason for that. I didn't like her then and nothing has occurred in the intervening years to cause me to change my mind; Idiot.
I have been involved in online communities since they existed, and have had some very interesting interactions through and due to them. A sailor I was in the Navy with and mentored to E-4 was reported to me to have died in 'Nam, and imagine my surprise when he contacted me a couple of years ago.

After 23 years of marriage, my first wife passed way 16 years ago. Due to an interesting set of circumstances I contacted my high school sweetheart who had broken up with me under mysterious circumstances, and I had thought badly of her for the intervening 28 years. We have been happily married for 15 1/2 years.
That's a heart warming story as I still try to find the one that got away on those sites from time to time. In the mean time I find it an invaluable tool for political and, well, social networking.

If one doesn't want to post a phone number then don't. If one doesn't want post their weekend activities then don't. It's as simple as that. That doesn't mean you can't have some kind of presence there. It is a good tool for keeping in touch.

That's good to hear, though I think a lot of that has to do with this being a 1st amendment issue. Still good to hear.
Would have been much much better if the NRA would have jumped on this 1st thing!
