So back to the firearm discussion, what draws you to the S&W over the XD? Different features or something subjective like it just feels better in my hand. Personally I like the "feel" of the XD and it has a 13 round capacity but I'm not sold yet, that's why I'm asking questions. Right now I'm leaning toward the XD but I hate buyers regret. Does anyone have anything bad to say about the reliability/quality of the XD series?

I have seen a couple of posts in this thread regarding the Glock 36. I agree that the 36 would be a fine choice. I would also personally recommend the Glock 30. I have owned and carried two over the past couple of years and, aside from the security of having 11 rounds of .45 in a small package, the model also proved itself (to me) as being both reliable and very accurate. If you read the reviews online, it has gained a solid reputation since it was introduced in 1997. With regard to your budget, I was able to pick up my latest 30 a few weeks ago (made in 2003 and in great condition) for $400 out the door. Best of luck.

I like the S&W only in the area of looks. It's a lot 'prettier' to me. It has a bit of a 1911 look to it (including the thumb safety), which my eye likes a lot.

However in regard to features and feel in my hand, the XD wins hands down (wish I could find one to shoot, no one's renting them around here). I like the way it feels in my hand much better, and I like the fact that it can hold up to more shots for less reloading when out at the range. It's knocked the PT145 out of contention in my book, so far.

If nobody pipes up with quality concerns, I think I'm probably in for the XD. I can't think of any situation where having more rounds is a disadvantage except it's a little harder to conceal. I'd sure like to test drive one though...

Just my 2 cents here on XD vs. M&P:

To me the XD is the winner for good looks and feels great in my hands.
I've shot them and like them a lot. In the thread "Real world performance of guns immersed
in water", someone provided a torture test that an XD was put through and it was
a champ. To reprise John Cameron Swayze: It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
Glocks have also gone through similar torture tests and done well.

To me although I think the M&P has kind of a homely look to its grip, it
also feels good in the hand. The M&P's reliability should be good since it's a S & W,
but I have not seen any literature on torture tests on it.

Massad Ayoob (sp?) has or had a Ruger P345 for his service weapon and liked it,
shooting it in some competition. He has a lot of weapons though, and likes Glocks too.

I carry a Glock 30 SF. Great little gun, reliable, accurate and not too hard to conceal. (Which gets 3 out of 3 for my requirements) The other advantage is that my wife feels comfortable shooting it too so she would have no doubts about using it if she needed to.

I did see a really pretty 1911 Colt the other day but there was significant price difference and the gun was a lot heavier in the hand....pretty gun though. I may get it anyway at some point but I doubt it would be a carry weapong for me.

After I figure out what this purchase is going to be I'll start saving my pennies for a 1911. It will be a home defense weapon though...

Ok, think I might be getting the XD within the next couple weeks.

Just sold my Sony Alpha A350 on ebay. After shipping it and fees, should be able to cover the cost of the XD45. Now... if the customer would pay me, we'd be all set. ;)

While I don't even remotely consider the XD a compact 45, it is still a decent weapon.

I have too many .45's.

We're on the road in Montana at present; however, when we get home mid-October, I'm going to offer up my LNIB Springfield Compact XD .45 with 4" barrel and thumb safety. That's not all, it also comes with 4 mags and all paperwork and case, etc.

$500 should be a fair price for this beauty - don't y'all think?

My XD .45 is a Service model with 4" barrel and thumb safety (the Compact is not available with thumb safety). And yes, I too think $500 is a fair price...FTF.
