I made the mistake when I first started SFA of asking the police what I was legally able to bring on campus and they said not even pepper spray was allowed.

If the police knew the law as well as lawyers did...
... well then why would they be cops and not lawyers?

That's weird I saw lots of people with OC on their key chains when I was going to SFA. No one even batted an eye.

Well I haven't been looking for OC but what year did you attend. Maybe they just gave me bad information.

My word! What could possibly be suspicious about activity in a parking area at 2.25 AM - no way!
Oh, God, here we go again!
You do realize, don't you, that not everybody wakes up at 5:00AM and is in bed by 9:00PM?
I do...

So lets say I have a Texas CHL and drive through Louisiana due to reciprocity, and come within 1000 feet of a school, am I then violating the Federal Law because I am not in the same state that it was issued?
Yes.
Man, Hoi and I should host a Radio show or something where people call in and we give our non-legal opinions of these things!

Can I supply the sound effects and comedy relief???

Back to the original topic... I'd like to add (whether you find it relevant or not) that I was a student at SFA at the time of this incident (I have recently graduated). The incident in question is in direct response to shots fired within 50 feet or so of campus.
Updated: 9:38 pm, Sun May 2, 2010.
"Deadly conduct, 1600 block of North Street. While attempting to clear a large fight at Taco Bell, officers heard several shots coming from behind the Wendy's. Nacogdoches police officers and University Police Department officers responded to the area. Officers located several spent cases and are continuing to investigate the shooting. There were no reports of injury." From the local paper.
(The Wendy's is no more than 50-100 feet away from campus property, including a dorm with 500+ students)
This is likely the reason behind the stop and ultimate search. I heard the people questioned/arrested included several (if not all) non-students.
I'm glad the campus pd stopped the non-students who had no business in the garage, especially with drugs and weapons.

I'm unhappy that our state and federal government have so kindly made the issue of where you may and may not carry so complicated that most police and laypeople have no idea what the law really says. Our tax dollars hard at work!

Sir it is not really that hard. Here is the nutshell that I hand out to my students.
1. Premisis of a School or an school event. K-University.
2. Poling place.
3. Court or office used by court.
4. Secure area of an airport.
5. Racetrack. Think paramutual gambling.
6. W/in 1000 ft of place of execution.
7. 51% sign. A bar.
Any place w/ a 30-06 sign. Everyplace except the above has to have a 30-06 sign including hospital, nursing home church, amusement park.
Other instructer correct if I missed on by memory please.

I don't think they violated 46.03 though, as Hoi pointed out. They were not on any Premiseses.....
I expect to see that charge probably dropped.
Isn't the state of AZ being sued for trying to clarify and enforce federal law?

No, they're being sued for trying to clarify and enforce state law.
The state law just happens to pretty much be the exact same as existing federal law.
