I remember hearing a story out of our family lore. One of our relatives a few generations back had a child that got a terrible illness. They were pioneers in TX at the time. The family moved all the other children out tried to care for the child as best as they could. When the child died they burned nearly everything and the house down and rebuilt. They loved their lost child, but they had other children to keep well too. Logs and linens could be replaced. Children could not be.

How is it that my relatives in the 1840's knew better than these guys.

And now the president wants to send 3000 soldiers to the danger zone.......

They don't need soldiers and if they did we should not be sending ours. Our boys did not sign up to fight a lethal disease with a minimum 60% kill rate. Are we going to quarantine all of them for a month after they come back to keep it out of the US population?

They need gloves, masks, fever reducers, IV's, electrolytes, better sanitation practices, and a plethora of other things. It seems we are sending some of that too, but why put our people in danger. Put it on a plane and send it.

Above all they need scientists to get a treatment plan. Figure out precisely what is causing the deaths (fever, electrolyte loss, dehydration, kidney failure) then figure out a treatment plan. It is a virus that obviously can be survived. How does one increase the survival factor?

This is a terrible disease, and I can only feel sad for anyone in any country that gets it.

It seems that Skippy Obama has decided that while we can only send a few hundred military people to the sandbox to try to stop almost 30 thousand enemies from chopping heads off, he will get better press by sending abut 3,000 US troops to help 'fight' ebola.

I hope times have changed. In boot camp I believe I got about two hours on decontamination, and that whatever you wore had to be destroyed, not reused.

I just wonder if they will bring the infected soldiers back to the US on a special jet with a special crew to a waiting special ambulance to go to a special hospital for special treatment?

It's only a matter of time before this thing mutates to an airborne virus. We need to pressure the governments of the affected areas to start using proper protocols in dealing with this thing or it will affect millions instead of thousands.

Yeah, The One will make sure they get "special" treatment alright....he'll insure their deaths are hidden and covered up.

Only Obama would direct the Surgeon General and doctors to treat gun violence as a public health epidemic and then send military soldiers to combat the ebola virus.

Some leading virologists are already saying the battle is lost in Liberia and the death toll will be 1,000,000+. Some say as high as 5,000,000. They say it will have to burn itself out naturally. Infected and death tolls are now 2X UN estimates of a month ago.

It is bad and getting worse, I just hope it doesn't cross any oceans.

Obviously, I am no expert, but my gut tells me we will see cases (not including evacuations like we have already seen) in the US. Very limited and well managed though.

I am also hoping (but I am in no way an expert) that if it was to cross an ocean that we have a better understanding of germ theory here and supportive therapy for those affected. Perhaps there is a way to increase the survivabilty with better care.

Survival rate in Africa is being quoted at approximately 50%
Survival rate in the US, so far, is 100%. Of course US sample size = 3 I think.

I believe the odds here are much better. Personnel, supplies, facilities, protocols.
