This is true, but in the case of the breakdown lane vs. shoulder, you are still talking about the
same (in this case - "location"). With magazines vs. clips, they are
not the same (in this case - "thing/part/item..."). They serve different functions. That said, you are right when you say, "It's all in what you are used to." If you are as old as I am, and likely carried an M1 Garand at some point, you are probably used to "clip" as the firearm loading device.

Technically...that is the magazine in an M1. It just happens to be a non-removable magazine. The Breach is the opening leading to the chamber in which the cartridge (or in the case of separate loading, the projectile and powder) is inserted.

Unfortunately for all of us, most of the old timers who carried M-1's in battle have passed from this earth. But their legacy lives in those who use clip and magazine interchangeably. I always considered it slang vs. truly incorrect word usage....
