In the spirit of providing precise information, individuals 18 and over can own and posses a handgun, they just can't buy it from a dealer.

There's also the military exception that allows me to legally carry my own handgun even though I am not yet 21.

What I find ridiculous is that I can walk into a Walmart with a loaded handgun on my hip, but cannot purchase ammo for the same gun.

Finally I would like to see at least military members allowed to carry on military bases, though I realize it is not a state issue.

By the way, what kind of handgun is on your hip that you can't purchase ammo for it at Wal Mart? All the Wally World's around me sell most standard handgun ammo - of course, they don't always have it in stock, but that seems more a private business inventory problem than a legislative issue.

Ah, no, not serious at all, but I did make a slight mistake -- it should have been "pistol-packin pre-schoolers". A better alliterative phrase.

I never saw the point of repeated fingerprintings either, and after reading this month's Texas Monthly article on Forensic Science, I wonder if they really even help, or hurt.

I am asking, as I do not know, but if it is legal, I am sure someone on this forum is near you and that could be arranged --- again, only if it is not illegal.

Just like with his pistol, it's only illegal (under federal law, not state) for a dealer to sell it to him, not for him to have it nor for anyone else to buy it for him.

Exactly, Walmart carries plenty of .40, but legally I can't purchase it because of my age (or lack there of).

Most of the Walmarts around Austin don't seem to carry any handgun ammo. If the do, then it is very well hidden. Heck the only one in the area that carries firearms is in Cedar Park and even then it's only shotguns and rifles.

Two tier CHL – hear me out. Basic CHL which is what we have now and an enhanced CHL that would allow you to carry pretty much anywhere a LEO would carry. It would involve extra training, harder practical test, more in depth background check, etc.

Elimination of sales tax on firearms, ammunition, range fees and range memberships, firearms training, holsters, reloading equipment, etc. They made it illegal to tax your right to vote (poll tax), why are we still being taxed on our right to keep and bear arms?

Range protection act. If it was there first, no one should be able to run it out of business with bullsh*t lawsuits, etc. unless they can PROVE a clear and present danger. Don’t want to live near a range, then don’t build or buy next to one – dummy!


Oh ya - also elimination of all sales tax and property taxes for anyone who is a life member of TSRA - Guess I went a little too far with that one. Still like it though!

Other than a timed reload, the TCLEOSE standard for Texas peace officer firearms qualification is pretty much like the CHL test. It's minimal, at best.

Of course, some agencies impose their own, higher, standards. But the state standard just isn't very hard.

Texas Administrative Code 217.21:
(c) The minimum standards for the annual firearms proficiency course of fire shall be:
(1) handguns - a minimum of 50 rounds, including at least five rounds of duty ammunition, fired at ranges from point-blank to at least 15 yards with at least 20 rounds at or beyond seven yards, including at least one timed reload;
....
(d) The minimum passing percentage shall be 70 for each firearm.
