If I were to get the 5.0 I would get a hand held tuner like the SCT or something similar as you can load up different tunes, data log, etc. These are around $375. The tunes will change how your car handles, i.e. air to fuel ratios that are controled by the car's computer.

I'm not sure how much the dyno tunes run, but again that depends on the shop that does it.

A 12.22 is AWESOME!!!!!! I remember breaking into the 12's in 1991 or so with my mildy tweaked '89 GT 5.0, for a street car, that was FAST back then!

Real life track report, with a stock car, regular driver shows the car running 12 second 1/4 mile in mid 90 degree temp.

I got the impression from the media, for what thats worth, that the 5.0 engine had been tuned-to-death prior to release and they had to resort to breathing mods to bring the HPs up to 412. How can dyno-tuning increase it?
Forgive me if that is a silly question.

haha i hear that! we bought my wife's used and it already had upgraded exhaust and cold air intake so I was able to scratch those off of the list. We added some under drive pullies, reverse glow gages and had to replace the intake manifold so when we did figured why not put in a higher quality thermostat and performance spark plugs. I'm in the process of dreaming up getting some headers, having the forward cats cut off and possibly some 4.10 gears.

After all that.... the 2011 shouldn't embarass us too badly at the track... but we'd still be watching that rear bumper getting smaller :

That's very possible, I hadn't heard that yet but I'm sure they did tune it to death. My thinking (and it's not even worth $0.02) but they probably also tuned it for fuel mileage and using 87 octane. If you change your fuel up, change up the injectors, throttle body etc a tune would probably help.

It's very believeable that they tuned it to death but i'm sure there's something that can be squeeked out LOL.

Cool, thank you for the replies regarding tuning. In my mind I was thinking that the tuning discussion was by having it tuned by a shop on the dyno and I wondered what all was being tweaked.

I've never really put much "faith" into the handheld tuners/chips with a naturally aspirated gas engine. Back when I dragraced, years ago, I tried a chip on my '89 5.0 and I noticed no noticeable gains on it (ie - ET's were still the same at the track). My only positive experience with a hand-held tuner was with my '01 Ford Excursion 7.3 Diesel 4x4, which is a turbo...I had the Superchips Tuner....WOW, talk about a difference! That thing drove like a BEAST! I've since heard, but not yet experienced, that the handheld tuners for the new generation of naturally aspirated performance gas engines does help. Just wondered how much. I tell you, I'd like to defeat the 137 mph top-end limiter on my wife's G8 GT, that's for sure!

The best tweak/tune I made to my old 5.0 was the high pressure/flow fuel pump (155liter/hr from what I recall?) and the fuel pressure (adjustable fuel pressure regulator with gauge). I went from running 7.70's to 7.20's in the 1/8 mile just be giving it enough fuel, granted, this was on a very mild NOS setup but it just was starving for fuel. The 60 foot times were essentially the same but more fuel made a huge difference after that!

With the way the computer runs these motors these days you can change just about everything with a hand held within seconds. Most hand helds will tie themselves to your VIN and you won't be able to use them on anything, but they are fun to play with and see what you get, heck on an automatic you can even adjust the shift points.

From the subject line I was expecting an STI Eagle 5.0, hopefully in 45ACP.

The car ain't bad though, either. ;-)

Anyone know of a reputable body shop that will put mods on your car in the Houston-area?

I want to put items such as window-louvers, side-scoops, hood-scoop, front-fascia and racing stripes on my car. I want someone honest, professional and hopefully charging a fair price.
