Settle a disagreement? Is using a red dot sight cheating?

A buddy of mine is on this forum. We both have Ruger Mark III hunter's. We plink at the range. He uses dayglo, I have a 40 dollar red dot sight from wal-mart. I'm dead on with it, blowing out the bulleyes at most distances. Him.., pretty good but not nearly as accurate. Since this is closer to a competition pistol with regards to accuracy IMHO, what do you think?

Kev, you dope! You're quoting me out of context.
Each has its application.
For me, I shoot the Ruger without a scope because I'm working to develop better skills. Controlling my breathing, holding it steady, pulling back my trigger finger without moving my hand, etc. All of those skills that I hone and make more precise every time I shoot the MK III translate over to every other gun I have. They're valuable, important skills in my opinion.
Resting the gun on a sandbag and pointing a red dot at a bullseye doesn't accomplish that for me. It's great if you're shooting purely for accuracy or you're just into that sort of thing, but for me the challenge lies in doing it with just the weapon.
To each his own. I personally find it boring to use the dot. But if it's fun to you, go for it.
My grandmother could nail the bullseye with your silly dot.
Also, I'm not taking you and your girlie red dotted Ruger to PSC anymore. Get your own membership! I'm taking my real, manly friends who can hit a target without a red dot.

How are the sights relevant to any of those skills? I shoot my wife's .22 pistol and rifle with red dots (CDNN has a pretty decent one for $20, BTW) all the time specifically because it helps me visualize my grip steadiness, trigger control, and the movement from breathing better than a post-and-notch sight or a scope. None of my guns have red dots, but the effect of the practice with them is obvious when I switch back to my guns.

I think you're missing a bit of the tongue-in-cheek banter between lawrnk and me.
At the range on Sunday lawrnk thought he was pretty hot because he had a tighter group than me using his red dot. I jokingly called him a cheater. Now he's all worked up over it because he knows he can't hit the broad side of a barn without his gadget.
That's it. I'm not genuinely trying to dismiss away the usefulness of red dots. I was just giving him a hard time.

It is NOT cheating to use different sighting systems....
It IS cheating if he thinks his groups off a sandbag compare to your offhand shooting.
If I could shoot off a sandbag in IDPA, I would always be Zero points down.

Faint, why do you even care? Use the best sight system you can get, get as many bullets as you can and use a machine gun if you can. Get a tank and airplane if you have one.
Always cheat!!!

I'm with JasonH...
One of my best buds just can't seem to shoot a little friendly competition without at least leaning on the bench when shooting. He normally kneels down and bench rests about everything, while I'm shooting strong hand, both hands, weak hand, etc. And then he brags about hit abilities

But then again, this guy has a special hole on the pocket of his golfing shorts that allow him to "find" his ball just inside the edge of the fairway, when it should have been 3 fairways over. One good thing about my friend, he's too danged cheap to buy even a $40 red dot to put on his Ruger Hunter!

Jealousy is so not pretty.
Jason, remember last saturday when you ran out of targets? I gave you a couple of my used ones. I said, "the bullseye is all shot up, but you can use the rest"

I wouldn't worry about it Jason.
lawrnk, always remember:
Proverbs 16:18... Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
I know you guys are just "picking at each other" and that its all in good nature. However, the only true measure of who is a more capable shot... is to use the exact same weapon under the same conditions.
So, swap weapons/techniques next time you go out... and let us how how each of you fared.

It is only cheating if you’re breaking a stated rule for the sole purpose of having an advantage.
