I actually agree with part of that. One of the Denton County sheriffs said "My jail is the largest mental health facility in the county. We wait for people with mental illness to commit a crime and then we lock them up" The rest of his message was that there was very limited treatment for those with mental issues and that many ended up as recidivists.

Here is some aspects of this. There are a lot of things that have been made illegal and assigned heavy penalties (not necessarily jail-able offenses) that shouldn't be. We use jail rather than fines in some cases where we shouldn't. But all that said, there are not many government run alternatives available and our mental health care in this country is a joke. Before you go and defund the police, there should be an actual, workable alternative - and there isn't one. Saying that she will figure it out when she had diverted to police funding is folly.

I was at a forum which hosted all of the judges in our county a couple of weeks ago. All of the judges spoke about their respective courts and how they were handling them. There are a number of programs that they are working with, mostly non-profits, to provide alternatives to criminal punishment. I was particularly pleased with some that were used for veterans. I would bet that St. Louis has nothing like any of these and will have nothing like them even after the police funding disappears. It is like the political claim of spending money on infrastructure - it never happens.

It seems that officers have learned a lesson from the Uvalde shooting. A quick response and decisive action is the way to go.

The important thing to learn from this shooting is how did the shooter enter the school if all doors were locked. I worked my entire career is secure areas and learned that some people will open a door for strangers because it's the polite thing to do.

The article states the school was locked and a security guard saw him trying to access the school. They seem to be very tight lipped as to how he got in and what actions the unarmed security guard took, if any, to alert others to a potential intruder. Judging by the condition of that rifle I'd say it was a street purchase.
