I don't go to the bhg.com forum as often as I used to, especially since school started. However, I happened upon this thread and was irritated by some of the posts I read.
I replied back. I'm sure the irritation comes through in my writing, but these ladies are saying that guns should NEVER be in classrooms or near children. I hope my argument was good.

I think your post was good.........

Unfortunately I think it will fall on deaf ears. You are talking to "Sheeple" and you will never convince them that the Dog is not a Wolf in Dog's clothing.

I personally have given up trying to convince fools like this of the error of their beliefs. They will die, I and those with me will survive.

Venus, your answer was articulate. I don't know whether the other participants can accept it.

They is the same weird mentality as people who think airline pilots shouldn't have weapons. We can trust a pilot to fly a half-billion-dollar plane with hundred of people aboard, but we can't trust him to handle a pistol? I don't get it.

Only one quibble:
hundreds of thousands of gun owners have never killed anyone
That should be hundreds of millions.

We in the pro-RKBA crowd often generalize that we will never change any sheeple no matter what we say. I am guilty.

Calm, collected, articulate individuals such as Venus and Suzana Hupp do more for our cause than most of us boisterous males could ever hope to achieve. Our type do have our place, but not on a teacher forum.

There really is no telling how many Venus touched with her posts.

After all, it is for the children.

Congratulations, Venus.

Public opinion is changed one soul at a time. Most people who are anti gun are not zealots, its an emotional reaction, and not thought out at all. These folks may be subject to the reasoning and logic process.

I believe VP planted seeds of logic and reasoning. No one is ever going to scream out on a forum board with an epiphany that they now see the light, and that their lifetime of thought was wrong. Seeds are just that. A beginning.

That being said. No ones mind is likely to ever be changed by usenet type zealots with flaming insults and gross expansions of fact. Although these types of wars can provide entertainment and joy, they aren't likely to convice anyone anything other than the fact that the guy you don't agree with is an idiot.

Pretty good job VP

In response to the "Wild West" comment:

I need to update my info so I can give an actual Site but a study was done comparing the crime rates in Silver City Nevada and Bedford Mass. for the late 1800's. The two towns are almost perfect statistical matches in pop size, demographics, industry etc. Only difference was that Bedford outlawed the carry of personal handguns. Want to guess which had more crimes of violence (murder, armed robbery, rape, assault)? and by how much?

Even if Indian attacks are figured in (and in my opinion shouldn't be), you were a LOT more likely to be attacked and killed East of the Mississippi during the days of the Wild West.

Another point you could make is the History of School Shootings in Isreal. At one point PLO terrorist would send trainees with full auto AK47s into schools to shoot anything that moves. The Isrealis started a program so teachers and parent volunteers would get training and carry concealed Handguns. There hasn't been a successful school shooting there since.

Just in the interest in accuracy. Was That Bedford Mass. or New Bedford Mass.? I suspect it was New Bedford which was a fishing whaling port city and would have been a busier more bustling place. I think Bedford would have been a sleepy little town back then. farmers and tradesmen mostly.

As I remember it the principle industry of the NE town was Whaling so therefore "New Bedford, Mass." as compared to Mining for Silver City, Nevada.

The main points made by the historical researchers were:
1 Almost all gunfights were young homeless wanderers shooting it out in bars (or in street in front of bars) and love triangles a very distant second.
2 There was way less crime (and violence) in the Wild West than in the Civilized East.
3 Although population density was a factor in amount of crime, it was not as important as the habitual carry of an effective means for self defense.
