55mph - I’m back.
LOL, that's not going to lower fuel consumption. Being on the road 27% longer is gonna take more time, cause lots more traffic, and hence increase fuel usage.

Slowing down some can save money. However, it's a different amount for each vehicle. Making a set max speed of 55 mph is just useless.

How did we possibly live through that era and not crash our cars from pure boredom?

Maybe it was not driving that speed and being in constant alert for Smokey.

Slowing down definitely reduces overall gas consumption. I was in the DC area in 1973 during the first Arab oil embargo. A local TV station rented a car and drove from DC to Richmond, VA. One way they drove 70mph and on the return they drove 55mph. Gas consumption was significantly less at the slower speed. The 55mph speed limit also had some other effects. It reduced wear and tear on vehicles to such a degree that auto mechanics and new car dealers saw less business.

History shows that it wasn't well received, and eventually the lower limits became largely ignored with higher speed limits being restored by popular demand. As for me, I rarely drive 70mph any more. I'm an old retired guy and I seldom need to hurry anywhere. I save gas and maintenance costs by driving a few mph slower, but I'm not recommending changing the legal speed limits for everyone.
