I bid on various auction sites - some gun related and some not gun related. I see people bidding more on items than what they can be purchased for from vendors. A recent example is a Brownell Quick-set Latigo Sling (my favorite sling) that had 36 bids at $102.5 plus $4.00 shipping and whatever sales tax added to that. You can buy one from Brownells for $59.99, $6 shipping and with Texas sales tax just over $70. I've seen some high dollar items go for ridiculous amounts over what they can be bought for. I guess it's a fever transmitted thru the electrons and emitted from the computer screen. Hope no one catches it.

I’ve been to a few gun auctions and others as well and it’s almost comical if not embarrassing to watch others get so caught up in bidding that they end up paying way more than the items worth. I remember years ago I was bidding against a guy for a storage shed. No minimum on bid raises so I kept bidding $1.00 over his, he got so frustrated and mad at me that he went really high on his last bid because he was bound and determined not to let me win. Well. I was happy to let him have it.

This is a little different I guess. However I hate to loose and I have to put myself in check not to get in a bidding war.


Gun Broker is one of the auctions I visit that I call “ghost bidders.” I bid on a Les Baer that was not cheap, but I was willing to pay. There was no reserve, no credit card fees, and free shipping. At the last minute of the auction someone with a NR (non rating meaning they have never made a bet before) pops in and out bid me by $300 and I wasn’t going to play their game. I did recently find out sellers on Gun Broker can fill out some type of paper work where they are not out any fees. So they just relist it until they get what they want.

Long story short I bought me a new one and I am in the precess of breaking it in.

There are sellers on Gunbrokers that I am sure have people come in at the last minute and bid a higher amount to up the costs. It has happened to me several times, to the point I won't bid on anything there anymore. I know there are good listers on there but trying to figure out who they are (ratings didn't matter) is something I don't have the time for. From now on, I will buy from someone I know or buy new.

That kind of online behavior has been common since the early days of ebay. I agree completely. Buy from someone you know or buy new

Maybe a couple of years ago, strogg and I attended an auction at the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department.

An FFL didn't pay his taxes, and his entire inventory of firearms was to be sold. The auction wanted to sell the entire lot as one batch. If they didn't get a bid for the whole batch, they would then auction off the guns one at a time.

Well, the bidding started, and only 2 guys bid on the whole lot. One of them won, and all potential buyers then walked out, since they could not bid on anything.

I wish I could remember the exact dollar amount, and quantity of guns, but we did the math at the time. It seemed clear that with a "meh" collection of used firearms, the auction winner would never make any money selling these guns. I guess call this an example of "auction fever."

I used to when I was younger but not really anymore. I figure what I would consider a good deal price is and stop there. I don't get caught up anymore in the bidding wars unless it's something I've been looking for and haven't been able to find.
