Pentagon Confirms Patriot Missile Accidentally Fired From Base in Qatar

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Patriot missile was accidentally fired from a military base in Qatar, hitting a nearby farm, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman said the missile landed in an "unpopulated farm area" and no one was injured.

The incident is being investigated, Whitman said.

"It's been described as an accidental discharge; beyond that it's just not clear at this time" what happened, Whitman said.

The official Qatar News Agency, quoting an unnamed official with Qatar Armed Forces General Command, said the missile was erroneously fired Tuesday from Camp As Sayliyah, located on the outskirts of Doha and caused no damage.

Good thing it was pointed in a "safe direction". I don't know how far those missiles can go, but if it had ended up some 50 miles north east of Qatar, Iran might be a little upset.

Sounds like they at least know to keep their weapons pointed in a safe direction in case of accidental discharge.

Patriot Missile batteries can be configured to fire on automatic once a non-friendly threat is identified. But I don't know if that's what happened in this case.

Don't these missiles have self destruction buttons anyway, for these kind of occasions.

MK48 ADCAP torpedos and Poseidon C4 Ballistic Missiles.

Never had a hot-run fish or a missile jettison.
