Dear All,

I work for Firecracker Films, a British documentary company.

We are making a documentary on families that shoot together. The director is filming with families across the United States at the moment, and is hitting Texas at the end of this week.

As I'm sure you're aware, it's now very difficult to obtain a gun license in the UK, so looking at how it's part of your everyday life is very interesting for us.

We are looking for young families that shoo together - for self defense, hunting or sport purposes. Whatever the reason, if you're passionate about your right to bear arms, I'd love to hear from you. I know that time is short, but I am keen to hook the director up with some more families in Texas.

Well my wife and I shoot together and do take our grandson along so as grandparents that leaves us out of the young family thing. Besides I am heading to the deer lease Thursday for a week to 10 day visit and I hope my next shoot is at Bambie's grandpa

I'd be a little leery of something like this.

I'm reminded of Michael Moore's "Bowling With Columbine" where he spoke to gun owners under the guise of being a friendly, curious documentary maker and then spun their answers into a documentary where he ridiculed them.

Not that that's necessarily the case here but it's probably worth being cautious.

Yep Jason you do make a very important point. Always eire on the side of caution. I personally would shy away from this invite but then again the Young Family thing sorta skipped over me anyway

What part of Texas are you going to be in? The state is larger than France so the area could make a huge difference in who can meet you logistically.

I was gonna say.... this being opening weekend for deer season, most shooters who hunt are gonna be in the field....

I'd approach with caution, after checking out firecrackerfilms.com. Their most recent releases include "Egomania", "Pyromania", "Erotomania", "The Man With No Past" (amnesia), etc.

They seem consumed with psycho/socio/sexual issues. I'd steer clear, because what you say at the time isn't necessarily what appears on screen. Look to any Michael Moore movie for confirmation.

The director grew up around guns, so doesn't have a negative slant on their use. He is interested in exploring why families feel it's important to raise their kids around guns.

I read this to actually say "He is interested in why in the world families feel it's important to foolishly raise their kids around evil guns".

Well, if you really want to conspiracy this thing out...I'll add this to the mix...

The U.N. Conference on Small Arms is in dire need of PR material to further chip away at a bunch of things that are even coming up for votes today in Washington D.C.

The U.N. LOST treaty, and the vote on cloture on yet another Illegal Alien Amnesty deal is up in the Senate on such a scary day...The symbolism is really ironic if you ask me...

Both of our US Senators are agreeable "Yea's" on both of these issues...

Not sure if they are much in the way of caring if we call them today...

And our Nation's sovereignty is yet again chipped away at...

Just thought I would interject this today...

I think they would be better served if they asked their own Countrymen their feelings about the confiscation of their guns and their resulting inability to protect themselves and families!

There is a lot of discussion about "the gun culture" and I think it is important to note that there are two distinct "gun cultures" in this country.

In the first, or "traditional" gun culture, children raised around guns learn to behave responsibly, that actions have consequences, that sometimes "I'm sorry" will not fix things. As they mature they are trusted (by family and society) to safely handle, own, and shoot guns wilth less and less supervision. At some point the child is considered sufficently adult that no supervision is required - the safey lessons and personal responsibility have taken root and are internalized.

Such a young adult thinks, "I am trusted, by my society, with the power to take the life of a game animal, to feed my family if need be; as well as the life of an aggressor, if it is immediately necessary to do so, to protect my life or the lives of my family or other innocent people. I'm trusted, and have the autonomy, to make this decision and act within the law the ethical and moral guidelines of my culture / religion / society."

In the "other" gun culture, which I personally believe to be a product of television and a misinterpretation of the "traditional" gun culture, possession of a "gun" is seen as proof of adulthood - a "gun" is an accouterment of an adult so possession of one must confer adulthood, as opposed to adulthood being a prerequiste for having a gun. The willingness to take a life (gang initiation rite) is seen as an indication that the actor is "bad" and worthy of respect (truly, worthy of fear and contempt) - as opposed to "responsible to put meat on the table or aggressors in the hospital" as in the "traditional" gun culture. This is a perversion of the tradition and a scourge, since it means that young adults who don't know any better (were never taught any better) go around shooting each other (and us) to gain status and respect.

Sorry this is so long-winded. The answer your director seeks is that to some of us, guns symbolize potitical freedom, independence, personal responsibility, and the ongoing choice to act for the good of our society.

If anyone goes along with this TV deal, you would be well-advised to get it in writing that you can review and ok (or not) the portion that contains your image/words. If they are unwilling to acquiesce to that, consider the reasons.
