The issue of how long it takes the DPS to actually issue a CHL from the time a complete application package has been received has been a subject of discussion for some time.

While we as citizens are REQUIRED to comply with the laws and are sanctioned if we fail to comply with them the state is not.

So, maybe an item for our 2007 Legislature agenda could be a change to the law to require the DPS to issue a temporary license without further cost to the applicant if the processing is not finished in the allocated time and issue a permanant license when they get to it... maybe not a perfect solution but an improvment.

Alternately, perhaps state should have to refund the application cost if they don't make the processing time... money talks.

Yes it does - That is something that I would like to see, but I doubt it would happen.

I think for the most part (and it could be said that its easy for me to say so) that the CHL office in Austin is doing a pretty good job of getting these things out...

The wait is agonizing, I know, for folks getting their first license...

Problems with the processing, and finding out about those problems is discouraging...

But...Patience is an easy thing for someone to tell someone else to have...

I think they get some, maybe not enough critisism for lagging on some packages and investigations, and that they might feel compelled to invent some "problems" to allow them to catch up on some peoples licenses...

Its a hard road to hoe sometimes, and I personally would like to find someway to send some good comments to them from time to time...

I have offered over the years to volunteer to come in and help out sorting and doing some non-investigative work to help the process go faster...To no avail...

To me, to get them to accept volunteers like us who have been through the process to help them keep ahead of things, solves a lot of issues...Because we know what its like to wait...And we have a vested interest in the continued success of the program...

I think thats a more positive idea that getting legislation through that penalizes them fiscally if they fail to get the licenses out before the time alotted...

Just a repeat of an idea...
