I'm looking for someone/a range etc. that is giving Hunter Safety Courses in or near Huntsville,TX b/c I was born after 9-2-71 and I'm required to have it .Plus I want to go deer hunting for the first time with the hubby now that deer season is open.

I know you can do some of it online but most say theres a 1 day "field training" required after you do the at home stuff. So does anyone know where I can go to one of these classes? b/c I'm not coming up with anything. :???:

any info is mucho appreciated.

It was a big step back in 1999 when Texas was the first in the country to allow at least part of the hunter ed. to be done via "home study".

As indicated on the TP&W "field day" web page http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/learning/hu ... tudy.phtml, there are not all that many "testing sites" available for the "completion classes" - and especially after deer season opens, many instructors are in the woods rather than doing classes!

Our little range in Denton County (shown as "Flower Mound" above) does more "completion classes" than anyone in the state, with "desperados" sometimes coming in from places like Houston, Abilene and Lubbock. Last week was "crunch time" for those needing a class before deer season opened Saturday. This week seems to be those who plan to go pheasant hunting in Kansas and just learned they must have written proof before being able to buy a license ...

hunter safety course update

So I took the Hunter's Safety Education course.I'm so glad its over but wish I had those 10 hours of my life back lol. But, atleast now I can go hunting on military reservations(father-in-law is a hunting guide at Ft. Hood) and the local National Forest. plus its a good chance for my hubby and I to do something together, since it was required for me to take b/c I was born after 9/1971.

Since my parents live in Corsicana I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and go for a visit and take the course at the local Gander Mtn. from 11/13-11/15. I made the 2nd highest grade in the class,a 96 including the range field test. Plus I got a free cute little blaze orange Gander Mtn. hat that says "hunter's safety graduate" across the back.(shameless advertising,I know)..

Man,there were some young teenagers in there that passed and I sure as hell dont know how.I guess they dont have a maturity test for young hunter's yet.

I do think that this course is a good idea to ensure the continuation of this sport and passed down to up coming hunters, but I wish I'd had a better instructor. He just "taught the test" he'd skip around and say "this is on the test" and then move on.We skipped ALOT of material in the book that I went back a read and did the practice test in the back of the book that he said we didnt have to do.I'm glad I did them b/c some of the things on the test were from things he skipped over.

He said hes 300 passing students shy of his 2K mark, which the instructor incentive for that is a free gun from S&W.He passed around his 500 belt buckle and his 1K hunting knife.I just felt like we were notches on his belt so he could get to his next freebie.Does that sound wrong? :???:

Tell me about the range field test.

I was born more than 20 years before the 9/71 qualification so it wasn't a required thing. But I enrolled my son in the mid 1980's and couldn't think of any reason to justify not taking it myself, so I took it along with him.

It was taught by a TPWD employee and presented all in one day.

But I remember nothing about a range field test.

I kinda wish mine had been an all day thing like my CHL class was but they spread it out from 6pm-10pm from Tues-Thurs.

My instructor wasnt a TPWD employee,he was just someone who'd taken the instructor's course thats open to anyone. They gave us a BB gun that was similar in weight and size to an open sighted 22 rifle (no "real" firearm b/c the test was done in the GM archery range which was not designed for guns) and we had to shoot 7 round at 20yards..it wasnt really a marksmanship qualification test,it was more to have us familiar with physical gun safety and sighting in and firing a weapon, particularly a long gun, which some of us had never done.

He also brought in a lever action, break action and pump action to class which each of us had to safely load (with hollow plastic shells) and then safely unload,

I've shot tons of rounds with my 1911 but rarely with a long gun,so it was good practice for me.I think my hubby is going to start me out practicing with his Remington 742 WoodsMaster 30.06 carbine,Savage Model 99M lever action .243,Savage Model 99 .308,Marlin 1895 lever action 45.LC( or one of his many other guns I dont feel like listing lol ) and let me see what I'm most comfy with.My sidearm will be my Springfield 1911 GI .45ACP Champion,

Not really,he just told us that the definition of ethics would be on the test and then moved along to the next thing on the test.
