can you use a laser while you take the shooting part of the test?

I can't speak for other instructors, but since I don't know of any rules against using a laser it's alright with me.

' called 'em with that question a year or three back and got a negatory on lasers. With people changes they've had, tomorrow might be another answer ...

As an instructor I know of no written law or rule prohibiting the use of a laser.

Interesting question now that I think about it. We had one person in my renewal class that used one of the Laser Grips on one of the new Smith and Wesson 1911's. Instructor never said a thing. If it is part of the pistol then I do not see why it would not be allowed. But heck I do not call the shots on this. You never know with DPS sometimes.

I was told it was OK, but didn't use mine last time. Of course my wife outshot me, also without a laser, she fired a perfect score and I dropped two points.

I do have to share, in my defense or as an alibi, the the following week I had arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder to repair all kinds of things in there. It had become hard to aise my gun without pain, and it still is, I'm going to fire my surgeon tomorrow, it's been more than 6 months.

It was a Fixed Time Course of Fire so time didn't matter unless you didn't get all your shots off.

I was really proud of my 248 on my CHL shooting test. I had the best score in the class.......that is until the 73 year old gentleman to my left had his target scored at 250 and one ragged hole no bigger than a regular sized coffee cup!! He shot this score and group with a WWII Remington Rand 1911 that had very little finish left on it and the worst sights imaginable. I was concerned when I watched him pull it out of the pocket of his overalls. The man never spoke, he never looked at another person and only answered two questions asked by the instructor. He kinda favored Richard Farnsworth. I was impressed with his ability at that age. His hands were still solid as a rock.

Oh back to the question at hand.......we were told by our instructor that he would not qualify us with any aiming device other that the sights on the gun. He wanted to make sure that we could shoot without the aid of any device that could fail. I guess we should have all laid down our guns and gone home since they were prone to failure more often that the aiming divices.

Having lost the front sight off my gun during an IDPA match, and knowing that my laser is a sight mounted on my gun, I would have to hazard a guess that he wants us to shoot either with whatever we have mounted on the gun, or nothing at all.

It never ceases to amaze me how much you can actually learn from an individual who carries themselves like that...

A older man with a with a well used pistol usually know how to shoot it :)
