how can you tell the difference between the early models of the m&p and the latest models? i know the newer models are supposed to have the melonite finish but how can you tell the difference? can the newer ones fire without the magazine? any info would be very helpful. thanks ---robert

All M&P's as far as I know have stainless treated with melonite.

The easiest way to tell older vs. newer is the sear disconnector. Older ones are hooked, and newer ones arent.

Also, the serial numbers go like MPX0000 where X starts at A for earlier models, and goes up for later models. They're around MPU now.

As far as integral lock or mag safety, it's an option on all of the available M&P's. Mine is an MPBxxx, and has no integral lock or mag safety. You'll have to look around for one, but it shouldn't be too hard if that's what you're looking for. I found one easily.

I think Nitrogen hit on the head. I don't know though if the newer ones have the option of the safeties or not? You might try the Smith and Wesson M&P Forum.

As far as I know the newest ones are revision "N". Field strip it and it will be printed on plastic under the slide.
