DuraCoat experiment Desert Camo 1911

Tried my own DuraCoating last night on a cheap High Standard. Wasnt gonna experiment on any of my Springers or Kimbers!
Came out pretty good to me, learned a few things and could do better on a second one, maybe a rifle.
Probably will add more black "twigs" tonight. Added a rail from Caspian while I was at it. Didnt match too well before the paint job. Made my own 1911 jig from a 1x4 and a junk mag to hold it upright to spray it. I didnt buy the templates from Dura coat just made my own patterns from masking tape.
I am not into the camo guns much but was something to do.

Not bad! I've always wondered how well Duracoat and other DIY finishes will wear over time (especially when repeatedly handled, drawn, holstered, etc...). Let us know how it holds up!

That is amazing. I like the step by step pictures. I am not much for the camo either, but rm9792 you did a great job.

Thanks, came out better than I expected. i am going to put black twigs over some of the bad spots. I have read it will hold up very well but we will see. I wanted a rail 1911 for night stand but $1000 for a new one was pretty steep. Got the add on rail for $49 and works just as well.
The Gray part was supposed to be forest green but they sent me Mint Green which is very light. Hint, you cant make it darker with brown or black, just turns gray.

that guys shotgun looked beutilicious,i'm gonna go buy some paint and do my RIA compact 45,i will post a pic when i am done.

Would you share some of the tricks? I am thinking about doing this for my rifles too.

Dont do straight edges, looks bad. Tear the masking tape down the middle to get a rough edge. Make sure you have the pistol securely held, I had to fix several spots where it fell over. Make sure your oven goes to 110 if you are going to bake it. Mine wont go below 170, so I used a heat gun and guessed. Most of all be patient!
Also, make sure you mix all the colors exactly the same amount of hardener. The amount of hardener determines gloss. A little makes a huge difference and you get different shines between colors.

Man, dukalmighty. doesn't take you long to do a project! There are places you could drop that pistol and have a real hard time finding it. That really looks like a functional camo. nice job!

Ya know, that thing would just disappear if you were to tuck it into a hula skirt. Looks like any concealment issues are over if you are willing to put up with a few chiggers.

I thought i had that hidden,I'm just wondering if under CHL law i can walk around with that think in plain view due to camouflage being a reasonable attempt to conceal
