I was reminiscing with a friend about my introduction to pistols; a family friend had a pile of pistols including an old cap and ball Ruger.

Been thinking of picking one up. what brands are to be sought after or avoided. I have all the “stuff as I have a cap-lock rifle.

One of the best is Uberti.

Recently acquired by Uberti, I would place Pietta just below Uberti.

Purely from a user standpoint the Ruger Old Army is hands down the strongest C&B revolver out there. Its accurate too! Not historically correct tho. The stainless one a great gun.
Historically, the top of the line would be the modern re-pro Colt's.
They made everything from a Walker all the way up to the 1862 Police.
Very nice guns but quite expensive.
The Uberti's are good guns.
Pietta's are next in line.
Armi San Marco isn't so hot.
Avoid a brass framed gun. The brass can stretch and make the gun "loose". If you get a brass framed gun shoot very mild loads in it.
This would be a brass framed gun like the Confederate re-pros or cheap-O 1851 Navies.
Brass grips are fine and should give you no trouble.
The 1858 Remington's are a bit stronger than the Colt open top design and are easier to disassemble to clean.
