Ok guys, I'll put my question to the wisdom of the board. I'm going to be in San Marcos visiting my younger brother on Thursday and he'd talked about maybe going shooing. What are y'alls preferences for ranges around the area?

I'm looking for either a good place to maybe shoot some pistols and sporting clays, or some place that allows movement when shooting targets (i.e. not just standing at a table firing your pistol). I searched the forums a little and didn't find a whole lot, plus I don't really know whats around.

I used to live in San Antonio and always went to Bullet Hole or A Place to Shoot, but that was a while back, and I don't know that we want to drive all the way down there just to go shoot.

So what say you?

P.S. - Is Kreutz's still in the same place in Lockhart?

Dietz in New Braunfels has a setup for clays as well as a handgun range. There is a 25yd handgun range and a 200 yd rifle range with target boards at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards.

Lone Star Gun Range in Lockhart allows moving, drawing, and shooting. There are 2 handgun bays and a rifle range with target boards pretty much wherever you want up to 100yd (the stands are movable).

I would have said those same two, plus Red's in South Austin.

Dietz's is a pretty friendly place and I love being able to go there with the kids. They make the young ones feel welcome too. But, they are not too fond of the moving or drawing and shooting and ban rapid fire.

Lone Star in Lockhart was started as a police/security range, so they allow almost anything to go. I have only been there once and they seem a little more expensive than Dietz's to me. But, if you are going to Kreutz's anyway.... And yes, it is still on 183 just north of the railroad tracks.

And if the weather turns bad, I have been using Red's on Hwy 71 in south Austin. They are an indoor range and it is obviously going to cost by the hour, so more than the two outdoor ranges. And since it is indoor, the targets are the only thing that moves, with the same ban on rapid fire. They have been very supportive and work with us for my running a quick police qualification test though, so they may let you do a little more if there is room and no crowd.
