I have a rookie question. When people talk or write about shooting a group of a certain size at 25 yards, are they talking about a specific number of rounds (say, 5 or 10)? And are they shooting from a benchrest to maintain consistency, or is this from a standing position? Thanks.

All of the above.

Typically five rounds, or six from a revolver.

Gun owners can be proud sometimes, and often don't bother to state specifics because others then assume the more difficult of the unspoken options.

A "group" is 5 rounds, standing, with whatever gun, caliber, stance and grip the shooter prefers, at a given range. Shooting from the bench is more a test of the gun than the shooter. More than 5 rounds per drill (definitely more than 10) increases the chances of shooter fatigue, which can be the purpose of a drill, but when you're solely gauging consistency of technique it throws you off.

Most say that a group of 4" or less at 15 yards centered on the target is good enough for 99.9% of defense purposes (it will certainly qualify you for your CHL if you shoot fast enough), and from there you should start working on other aspects of defensive pistol shooting like rapid sighting from low-ready, point fire, double-taps and general speed drills. If there's any way you can SAFELY create a shooting environment that gets your adrenaline going, that's even better.

I can fire very accurate 1 round groups!

It's only when I fire the second round that things tend to go south.

LOL, that's a nice way of putting it. I see too many reports of rifles that "shoot half inch groups", and only when the details are forced out do we find that the group was shot at 25 yards, not 100.

I choot the same way,I can shoot 1/2 inch groups with a 45acp i shot at a time.
