Just showed this morning.

Showed a single mother talking about an attempted break in. Also showed her new AR and how she isnt afraid to use it :)
GLENN HEIGHTS - An attempted break-in early Sunday morning led to a terrifying and unexpected wake up call for a woman in Glenn Heights.

While four men failed to break into Carrie Shannon's home on Brentwood Street, their attempt was captured on surveillance video.

Good locks on the doors, cell phone and a handgun allowed her to give her interview. Her good video system hopefully will allow for a solid prosecution. From the looks of her new toy I doubt the morons would want to return for another try.

An EXCELLENT reason to also have a cell phone backup on your home alarm. I think I'll be ordering one.

I'm still amazed at how embolden these criminals act. I'm glad she and her children were unharmed and hope that the pukes are brought to justice.

Please don't be. Get it fixed firmly im your mind that there are people just like this who wish to do you harm. You might meet them anywhere at anytime. Be polite to everyone, but have a plan to protect yourself from everyone rapidly and with violence of force.

I could not agree more!

I have also had to train my brain to focus on the fact that I do not know what my attacker might look like. They don't have to be covered with tats and without a shower for two weeks. It could be a grandma or a pre-teen.

TXI and J,

I agree with both of your statements. I know as of late, I have been evaluating my own self defense/awareness routines wondering if I was just overreacting to a few exceptional events that managed to make it to the news. Since purchasing my first home and getting married less than 6 months ago, I have more than ever started to appreciate/understand the meaning of preparedness, situational awareness, and preservation of another life I vowed to cherish and protect from harm.

I looked at that house in the video and thought immediately, "My God, that looks like my house...even on a corner!" I liked the camera system she had. I would be curious to know if that was put in place before or between the first robbery and attempted 2nd...or perhaps it was installed prior to her buying the home altogether. I hope the tapes lead to an arrest.

According to the news report I saw last night, she installed them after the first attempt.

If i'm correct most home burglary alarms are transmitted over phone lines, these guys knew what they were doing,I don't think they realise what was waiting for them if they had got in.Also notice even though she called 911 mmediately the thugs were gone before they got there, which goes to show police don't magically appear, and if they were running with sirens might of spooked them or they were timin hemselves and it took to long to gain access so they took off

Hello to all,

First time poster, long time forum browser-lurker. Just wanted to chime in on this developing story and wanted to share my story in regards to the topic. Me the wifey and 2 daughters are living in Midlothian currently and had a simillar incident happen Sunday night. A buddy had dropped by around 8:30 ish for about 30 minutes and we sat out in the front driveway and chatted and had a few smokes noth abnormal for the two of us oldies. Within 2 to 3 minutes of my buddy leaving I went and sat down at the computer and decided to shut down everything for the night and climb in bed. Now when I say shut everything off I mean the massive flood lights out front and the video surveiliance system that surrounds the house. I figured everything looked secure and all doors and windows were locked tight and cars are put away in garage so i'm just gonna crash and sleep in peace for a change. We've had some pretty serious issues in our neighborhood in the past few months and thats why we have the video system. Well there was my big mistake for the night.

Well all seems fine and i'm set in motion to sleep good up untill I get a small hunger craving for a late snack and get up to find it and while eating the snack I decide to go back to the pc and browse a few sites on the net and when I sit down at desk all I see is this massive bright red blinking light coming off the DSL modem letting me know dsl is obviously down. I reach for the phone to call AT&T to see how long dsl is going to be down only to find I have no dial tone. I think to myself thats odd cause 45 minutes ago all was in good order. Not now. I call budys house to see if his service is on using my cell phone to find his is all good there. he lives 2 blocks up so something must be wrong at the box outside I guess. First thought was the dogs had tried to dig out under the fence again and this time bit into the wires....AGAIN. Our phone cable is crappily burried alongside of fence and house. I walk outo back to see if dogs are therechewing on them only to find them sleeping hard in dog house. So just for kicks I goto front side of house just to give the phone box a glance only to see the box smashed open and wires jerked ouf of box. All parts dangling off wall onto the ground. Yep you guessed it someone took out our phone system. I have no clue why or who did it but we are deeply concerned. Phone company came out this morning and did the repairs and even the tech commented on how bad it looked and seemed and said "sir no animal did this, someone either doesnt like you all or is was coming back later to rob you".

As of this posting all is cool here and nothing has gone wrong but we are sitting around very attentive to the outside.

I guess my moral of story is like the ol saying if your gonna conceal carry theres no reason to not have the damn gun chambered. Same with the video camera system theres no reason to have one for their costs and effectiveness if it's not going to be on. But had it been I almost would bet were dealing with the same punks cause I dont think the robbers in the news story have been found yet and midlothian aint that far off from Glen Heights.

But like the single mom on the news I too wait paitiently with my ar-15 by my side at all times while indoors and xd-40 on my right hip.

Everyone be safe and give extra thoughts to your normal home security setup and locks and things and if you got em use em. A camera on the walls is a paper weight if their not active.

By the way for those that are interested in home surveilence check out the WiLife camera systems they are fairly cheap to buy and are a quick easy setup with 0 wires to run. All images record in real time to your pc saved on hard drive with very good color video and ease of playback and can be remotely monitored over the web from your home to your office for free 24-7. Constant recorded or motion zone detection settings. Fry's sells them for $299 a kit. You can install 6 cameras per system inside or out weatherproof and they even have hidden cams.

Rather than hijack this thread, I'll start another one about surveillance setups.

Edited to add: new thread in the technical forum for this.

Not a problem.

I believe home surveillance/security is very relevant to this thread.

That seemed like quite a camera setup she had going on there.

Im thinking i woulda been watching the video of that BG trying to kick my door in with the AR in my hand waiting to see if he woulda got it upen.

Im not sure if shooting through the door with video of the guy tyring to kick it in wouldnt of been totaly legal??

Welcome Scooter!

I am not too clear on the shooting through the door thing. Too many unknown variables. I've heard some people on here advocate just getting to a safe zone of the home (not fleeing...just common sense)for defensive positioning. Was she actually watching these thugs on the cameras at the same time it was occurring or do you think she was arming herself? I don't know if I would be sticking to the monitor with loved one's sleeping in the house. I guess I'm answering a question with a question sorry. Good thread.

First I'd like to say that it's nice to say a lady being brave and trained in firearms handling. Secondly that video scares the heck out of me, confirming that my worse fears in regards to the real presence of bad guys being more real than not.
That said, I'd like some imput from the rest of you. After reading a bunch of the posts on this board I realized that a high powered rifle might not be the best choice for self defence, not that it would'nt take care of the bad guys, but maybe the neighbors acrosss the street too.
I'm wondering what you would prefer - 30 rds. of over penetrating rifle ammo or (the conclusion I'm starting to prefer in my mind at least) say 5 to 8 rounds of 00 buckshot. From the costs I've seen posted you could get a semi-auto 12 ga. for a little less than a AR or Mini 14, spray every foot of a room/door with lethal lead really quickly and not worry about over penetration. What do you think?
