I went to shoot my Springfield XD 40 sub compact today for the first time. On two occasions the gun failed to cycle another round. I was shooting magnatech ammo. Shot fifty rounds, happened twice early on. Can I chalk this up to a new gun needing to be broken in? Anyone with similar problem?

No, It was new in the box. I did not thing that I would have to.

Then I'd say that was probably the problem.

NIB guns should always be cleaned and lubed before the first use. This is usually stated pretty strongly in the owner's manual.

Give the gun and magazines good cleaning and thoroughly lube the gun with a good grade of gun oil. I like Militec, Break Free, Corrosion X and Mobil 1. (I know Mobil 1 is a motor oil but, it is also a GREAT gun lube too!) Try it again with some Remington, Winchester, or Federal ammo if the problem still persists contact Springfield.

I have and carry an XD9SC. 500+ rounds without a single problem.

I did clean and lube before I fired it the first time.

It is a long way from Croatia to the US.

Short barrel + .40SW round = higher likelihood of limp wristing

It happens to me sometimes. Usually after shooting several boxes of 9mm from pistol with a longer barrel.

Yep, you gotta. Virtually all NIB guns are coated on the inside with a preservative grease. It's a rust-preventative and heavy-duty lube, tolerant of high heat and cold, as well as many hundreds or thousands of people working the action. BUT it's too thick and gummy to allow for proper cycling and should be removed and replaced with your favorite gun oil/lube prior to first use.

Some weapons' slides can easily be stripped into their component parts (my Ruger can be field-stripped, then you simply remove the extractor claw and the safety and fireing pin can be removed as well); if this can be done on an XD easily you can strip it down and give the parts a good scrub in the sink, detergent and all. Rinse and air-dry, get the gunk off the frame's rails (I wouldn't recommend giving the frame a bath), then lube thoroughly but sparingly and reassemble, and you'll find the gun behaves much better. You may also need a few hundred more rounds through it to wear it in and get it to cycle more smoothly. All of this is common to most guns, and only the finest tolerances and the most losely constructed guns don't improve noticeably as they break in.

New to Forum, CHL and the XD40SC. Just put my first 150 through it this weekend and experienced same. Then realized it was only with extended mag. The change in grip pressure did not "engage" safety. Gotta keep it high and tight.

My XDsc40 failed to cycle twice when a friend shot it. She was not fully engaging the grip safety. It has never had a problem with me. Bought it new in Oct '07. It has about 800 rounds through it so far.

Have about 500 rds through my wife's XD9 without a single problem. We did clean it before taking it to the range the first time.

Happened again today with both mags, two different types of ammunition as well. I do not believe that I was limp wristing. I called Springfield and got the info. to send it back to them for inspection/repair. Probably had about 10 failure to feed's, not a stove-pipe, the slide would just not go forward.

I have had an XD 40SC for about 9 months now and had some early "break in" issues.

I did clean and lube the pistol before my first outing and still had two FTF out of 100 rounds. I read on the XD forum that some XDs simply need a break in so I took no action with SA.

Happened on two following outings but have had no problems since. Now have 700+ rounds and it shoots great. No longer bother to clean it after each outing and it continues to work just fine.
