Attacking someone with a baseball bat is deadly force.
Therefore, deadly force is authorized by law.

Pur me in the shoot category. No way am I going to not defend myself and my wife if someone starts pummeling me with a club.
BTW, sounds like the lady did good!

A baseball bat is certainly deadly force. Here in TX, I believe the law allows for a response in kind. Since SEP 01, there is no obligation to retreat. Given the scenario as described, I think that I would draw. Hopefully, that would pursuade the BG to break off the contact.
Then I would imediately call 911 to report the threat this guy is posing to other hikers.

SHOOT, One good crack to the noggin with a bat can kill easily.
I believe he would have to be shown why you don't bring a bat to a gunfight.
This one hits a little close to home, when I was much younger I got blindsided by a irritated kid with a Louisville. A broken arm and concussion later I was happy to be breathing.

If you have pepper spray with you give it a shot. Otherwise put me in the shooting category.

I got blind sided in the mind by a 2x4 when I was young. Playing StarWars in a junkyard..The Force was not strong with me.
Once the threat was eminent, "drop it!", if he does not and the threat proceeds, I'll end it. This of course in the scope of 4 seconds or less of sheer terror.

Not to be a kill joy, but how many of you have been in shoot don't shoot situation in real life? It is very simple to sit here in front of a computer and say what you would do. Real life is a whole new game.Though in order to be better prepared for that day should it come you should regularly imagine yourself in a situation and go step by step on how you hope you would react.
I was a police officer 15 years with a stint in SWAT. Hopefully none of you will have to make that decision.

I fully agree.
Sometimes we tend to get too contrived with these things, especially the hypotheticals. My intereests run more towards analyzing real life incidents.

I would agree with your basic thought that those of us with a LE or miltary background may have more hands-on experience either on the street or in combat. However, I think discussing these kinds of issues gives those with less experience a chance to think about and discuss it. They get a chance to see it through our experiences if we share them.
Experience isn't everything either. Those with less experience have plenty to offer to the discussion and may help some of the more experienced see the issue in another light.
While I don't agree with everything posted on this forum, I enjoy the debate and try to take something away from each discussion.
YMMV...

Not me...against humans, at least; with animals, it boils down to a technical question of safe backstop vs immediate danger.
OTOH, these scenario questions are here to help with the same things I came here for; in the unfortuante event that I am ever in that situation, I want to have a) a gun, b) the skills to use it properly and c) the mindset to do it decisively if necessary.
Working through as many of the decisions as possible ahead of time drives home the importance of the first two, and provides a reference (to put it in computer terms, a lookup table rather than an equation) to help with the last.

Sounds like it worked out ok for them and I'm glad for that. It's hard to say what I would do with the minimal amount of information given. I do know that it doesn't take 15 years of police experience to recognize that being beaten with a club is deadly force.
