Looks like Springfield is adding a thumb safety to the XD. I prefer mine without but I'm sure opinions may vary. Haven't seen any other mention except on the page below and looks like they have pictures with the thumb safety version up already.

i believe it's an option so you'll be able to buy an XD with or without the safety...

Other than the fact that you will not use it, what is the objection of the thumb safety?

Could this possibly an addition for LEO regs for service carry?

Sharp edges and the risk the safety will be engaged unintentionally.

Oh come on, sharp edges and accidentally engaging, if the picture is accurate, the safety is properly designed to address the sharp edges. As for accidental engaging, it would seem to me that with there 1911 background they should not how to engineer a safety to be functional.
The presence of a safety makes more sense on this type of piston than on DA/SA models. How many of those guys in YouTube videos would have loved a safety when sticking a "safe action" pistol down their pants?

My question is why? With the grip safety and the trigger safety there is no need for it. I think this will hurt their sales.

It was designed to fullfill the requirement set forth by the DOD when they were looking to replace the M-9. It was supposed to be .45, and among other things have a thumb safety. Also I don't think it's going to be the standard but instead something you can get. Perosnally since I predominantly shoot 1911 I wouldn't mind and would even ask for it on mine.

I know I don't get a vote, but I think I would rather have a thumb safety and no "trigger safety." That way I could still ignore the thumb safety.
I still don't get it. Put your finger on the trigger safety and pull it so you can pull the trigger? If you don't want to pull the trigger then keep your booger hook off of it.

Forgive me for being so dense, but if the shirt gets caught on the safety isn't it possible to pull it and the trigger?
