Three women were shot to death inside the Louisiana Technical College about 8:30 this morning, Baton Rouge police said.

One of the dead women was apparently the person who shot the other two women before shooting herself, Sgt. Don Kelly said.

Kelly said police have preliminarily identified the shooter and victims, who were all students. However, police are notifying families before releasing the names. He said the shooter is 23, one victim is 21 and the other 26.

No one else was wounded.

Police are releasing some students, but those who were in the classroom where the shooting occurred are still being questioned.

At 8:36 a.m. police received multiple calls from inside the college at 3250 N. Acadian Thruway East about shoots being fired, Kelly said.

At 8:40 a.m. police entered the main building on campus and found out the gunfire was in a classroom on second floor. A short time later, police found the dead women in the classroom.

Rachelle Franklin, 21, said she was called about 8:40 a.m. by a friend, who told her not to come to the campus because there had been a shooting in her nursing classroom.

Angelina Seal, 24, looked relieved after picking up her 4-year-old daughter Rose, who had been in the on-campus day-care center.

“I was freaked out, she said. “They wouldn’t let me get to my child.

But her mother, who works at the school, was able to bring the child to the side gate.

Rose hugged her mother once outside.

“It scared me, the child said.

Joe May, president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System that oversees the technical college campus, said he understands the three killed were all nursing students, but isn’t completely sure.

“My heart goes out to the students and their families, May said. “It’s just a tragedy.

Jim Henderson, a senior vice president with community and technical college system, said counselors are on site and classes have been canceled for today, Monday and Tuesday. They might resume Wednesday.

A young woman killed two female students in a classroom at a vo-tech college, then killed herself Friday, Baton Rouge police said.

Police did not know the women's names or ages, or whether the killer was also a student at Louisiana Technical College, said Sgt. Don Kelly.

The first two women killed apparently were in their seats in a second-floor classroom on the small campus, Kelly said.

"About 8:36 a.m., we began receiving multiple phone calls from inside Louisiana Technical College ... multiple calls from cellphones, saying shots were being fired, people had been shot."

Police were there within four minutes and ran into the building, he said. "There was mass pandemonium, people running. One officer - the first into the classroom - told me he could still smell gunpowder."

Kelly did not know what subject was being taught. The school offers classes in a dozen subjects including early childhood education, practical nursing, drafting and welding.

The incident came on the heels of two attacks in public places. In Portsmouth, Ohio, a teacher's estranged husband charged into her classroom Thursday morning, firing a gun, then stabbing her. He later killed himself; the teacher survived..

In the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood, Mo., a man who had lost a free-speech lawsuit against the government stormed a council meeting and killed three city officials and two police officers, critically wounding the mayor.

Police are telling parents there is no need to go to the campus and that it might be a while before students are released.

Notice that the victims were old enough to have a CHL, but would be denied the right to have a handgun on campus if they did.
