Question about ammo supply

Had a friend ask me a question today, and I didn't have a genuine, statute quoting answer for them so I figgered I'd ask ya'll.

Q: Is there a limit to the amount of ammo you can have, at any given time. The supposition is that it is illegal to "stockpile" ammunition.

I basically tol' them that I had not read, nor seen anything that gave a ceiling to how many rounds you could possess, other than the physical ceiling in yer closet "rlol"

so, whaddya'll think?

No!

Although I admit my stock might make the news.

But then my friend and I went on a quest one day to buy up all of the bulk .22 ammo from the local Wal-Marts.

I wonder what they could make of 23,000 rounds of ammunition?

Hmmm, 23,000 rds of .22.....

I think I may have to call DHS. Sounds like a large scale terrorist plot against the squirrel population to me! :biggrinjester:

There possibly might be a limit dictated by NFPA fire codes.
I've read on other sites of people running into this problem, especially reloaders.
Every town adopts different versions of NFPA codes, so you should check with your local fire chief.

My next door neighbor's then new boyfriend told me once that BATFE rules said you couldn't have more than 1,000 rounds of ammo in your home. I checked with a BAFTE agent I know who broke out laughing saying, "Oh heck, I'm in trouble because I have more .22 ammo at home than that!" :smilelol5: Fire codes may regulate the amount of ammo you can store but there are no Federal regulations.

Someone told me 10k was the maz as per ATF - but then I asked on my forum and a couple of other places. I also checked the ATF website and Google. I could find no such law/rule.

However, you do see criminals making the news - and even though gun violations are not what they are charged with - all hell breaks loose if they have multiple guns or tons of ammo...

It's part of the culture war.

There's no such thing as too much ammo...unless you're swimming.

If 10,000 rounds is the most ammo you're allowed to have, then I'm in trouble...

I think I've misplaced more than that in bricks of .22 alone... :biggrinjester:

No federal laws that I know of of but local law may be another story. And, IIRC, there used to be something in Texas law about having more than a certain amount of gunpowder in your home. It was more powder than most reloaders would keep around at any given point in time. Don't quote me on any of this, it's late and I don't have time to look it up.

I believe there is a limit to the amount of black powder (explosive) that you can have, but not smokeless powder (propellent).

I feel squeamish if I think I might drop below the 5k threshold on 9mm. Not to mention the case lots on other calibers, just cause the price is right.
I'm with Thane, if I cleaned out all the range bags, ammo cans, car, van, and pickup stashes It would be more than I could lift.
