A two part question:
1. Does anybody know if the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth is posted 30.06 or not?
2. I will be going with a school sponsored field trip. Does this make it off limits even though it is not on the premises of a school?

I should add that our kids go to a private school that meets only two days a week and the other three (including the day of the trip) we are technically homeschooling. The trip is "coordinated" by one of the teachers (we turned money in to the school secretary) but we are responsible for our own kids and getting them there. I'll probably leave it in the car for this trip but I was just curious if there were any nuances I'm missing.

I went to the Kimball Art Museum with my wife to see the current special exhibit about 1 month ago (right before I got my plastic), but I looked and did not notice a 30.06 sign posted. I had been trying to pay attention to places that had that so that I'd be prepared.

As for the field trip, I have no idea.

I went to the Kimball last March, and I never did notice if it was posted, but I wasn't thinking CHL at the time. That being said, it was astounding. I brought my world traveling mother, who has been in practically every great art museum in the world, including the Hermitage, and she pronounced it an absolute gem - once of the very best art collections she's ever seen. It is WAY better than the Dallas Museum of Art, and although the collection is smaller, on a par with anything I saw in the Louvre.

Personally, I wouldn't let having to disarm temporarily stop me from visiting it again. But that's just me.

Does THIS constitute written notice?

Backpacks, large purses, umbrellas, or other bulky items are not allowed in the galleries. Free parcel check is available.

Reasonably sized strollers are allowed in the galleries unless the galleries are crowded. Children must not push strollers.

Photography is not permitted in the exhibition galleries. Nonflash photography is allowed in the permanent collection galleries.

Unless prohibited during a special exhibition, visitors are allowed to sketch on sketchpads, in pencil, as long as it does not obstruct or interfere with other visitors.

No food or drinks are allowed in the galleries.

With the exception of law enforcement officers, weapons, including knives, are not permitted in the Museum.

No. Written effective notice must use the same verbage as the 30.06 signs.

That's what I thought. I went there, and just now got home. I carried inside anyway. There's no 30.06 or any other kind of signage. That comment on their website is the only word about it.

This is a currently debated part of the law that can be taken either way. My opinion was that the law says this would be illegal since you are on a school sponsored trip. As I understand Charles' thinking, the law is meant to refer to the exterior grounds of the school itself that are not normally covered by the prohibition. There are certainly valid and rational reasons for both opinions. The biggest argument against my opinion is that it would make many places prohibited that you had no way of knowing. One perfect example would be a CHL in this same museum who is not with your group. If I am correct, he would be violating the law and never know it. If he was there before you arrived, your arrival would make him illegal and there was no possible way he could avoid it.

So, I have modified my reasoning to be more in line with Charles except that I still think it applies to any location IF you are part of the school sponsored activity. I am guessing this would be more in line with what the legislature intended. Of course, I could be wrong all the way. Charles could be entirely right and my original opinion on the ban could be right. Until the courts decide, or the legislature clarifies it, we will never truly know.

And, your situation makes it much more unclear. Home schooling is such a gray area in many parts of the law, there is no way of knowing how it would apply. In one sense, your home is now a school too. Is your home banned? If you just took your children to a museum as part of their education, without the school association being involved, would that count as a school sponsored trip? I have no idea how home schooling would change any of the laws on weapons and schools.

I would think that if you're homeschooling, you're the school administration. The school administration can give people permission to carry, so I guess you better ask yourself if it's OK.
