What do you recommend for a person who is not a CHL holder? My wife has no intention of getting CHL (still working on covincing her). The only thing she has on her is a key chain pepper spray that was bought years ago, it splurt out a red liquid when you pressed it.
I saw this gadget at Carter's Country the other day that shoots pepper pellet, but can't remember the brand name. Is that any good?
I would like to hear your recommendations, or what your wife/gf is doing for precaution. Thanks.

Self-defense courses for women are available. The NRA has one called "Refuse to be a victim." There are many others.
I think the main thing is instilling situational awareness and an assertive mental attitude. Anything can be an effective weapon, including your body, if you have the will and know how to use it.

In addition tot he training, and only after that, I suggest you look at the Taser for her.
I also suggest some new pepper spray since ti needs to be replaced every couple years. In addition to checking the expiration date, some of the seals will deteriorate early after you use it once. If you tested it, the seals may have leaked out the pressure to spray after a while.

SeamusTX hit the nail on the head :
“I think the main thing is instilling situational awareness and an assertive mental attitude. Anything can be an effective weapon, including your body, if you have the will and know how to use it.
But getting that attitude in folks can be a very daunting task if they are predisposed in the opposite direction.
My wife is very competent with both rifle and pistol. She has her CHL and has developed a reasonable situational awareness capability. But she adamantly believes in the “goodness of the human spirit, and deep in her heart doesn’t understand how violent and despicable a human can be. It's one of the things I love about her...
Of course she’s read the stories in the news, how could she not… I keep shoving them under her nose. But reading a story and actually accepting that could happen to you are not necessarily linked.
She’s a good person and has spent her whole life living in a non-violent world…which I sincerely hope continues for the rest of her life.
Now her odds are better with the training, CHL, and situational awareness…but her willingness to “trust in the force could undo her in the moment of truth. I just pray that moment never comes…

Is the gun the issue or going to the class? Sometimes people are intimidated by one or both of those. I think the class is excellent and covers information needed for all.
Maybe she would go to a pepper spray class?
