For your edification and amusement, this sign is prominently displayed on the front of the Texas First Bank branch in Crystal Beach, on the Bolivar Peninsula, which I call home.

PROHIBITED ON
BANK PREMISES

I will say this -- it is big. Almost bigger than the bank, which is a tiny little wood frame building. In fact, it is the only bank in Crystal Beach

With respect, the sign is perfectly legal. It is not against the law to put that sign up. It is just not effective to accomplish its intent, and I am free to walk into the bank with my concealed weapon in my pocket, as is always the case.

I do not mean to be a wise guy, but this general area is a place where we should watch our words carefully, and I have so often seen such ineffective signs called "illegal," "invalid," or some such, when what is meant is that they are ineffective. I suspect that sometimes CHL instructors may be the worst offenders here, and their choice of language is picked up by their students, and on it goes.

No offense intended, and I trust none is taken.

None taken. You are completely correct. The sign IS legal, but not enforceable against CHL holders. I chose my words poorly.

I didn't see one at the Galveston bank last time I was there. I must admit, however, a bad habit. I don't often look closely at signs plastered all over banks, as well as elsewhere.

Funny -- as often as I drive through Winnie I have never seen the bank -- only the fancy new ATM machine in High Island.

Personally, I suspect this sign at Crystal Beach is likely to have been posted by the local branch without consulting "higher authority." The building has just been remodeled after a burgler broke in through the ceiling, , and a sign in the closet may have been dusted off from the "ol' days." I don't think a lot of the residents here in my home town on the "Redneck Riviera" are up on all the latest doings of the legislature. After all, were it not for Chas. the same would be true for a lot of us, including myself.

Needless to say, I have remained silent to the bank employees and officers, to avoid educating them and perhaps seeing a complying 30.06 sign pop up.

Giving due consideration to their history, I'm a little confused as to why the don't include chainsaws, ladders, ropes, and axes in the "not allowed" sign. I suspect it would have about as much impact.
