Not exactly a gun rights poll, but a home defense one.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- A homeowner shot a man early this morning who police say tried to get into his home through a back door, authorities said.

The 27-year-old North Richland Hills man was shot in the shoulder and taken to a local hospital, police said. His condition was unavailable.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident happened about 12:30 a.m. in the 7900 block of Laura St.

The 30-year-old homeowner told police that he was awake discussing vacation plans with his wife when he heard someone trying to get into his home through a back door. While his wife called 911, the homeowner armed with a handgun went out to investigate, police said.

The homeowner fired once when he saw the man in a side backyard, police said.

When police arrived, the 27-year-old man was on the ground in the backyard, North Richland Hills police Sgt. Greg Trickey said this morning.

Police plan to present the case to the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office for consideration of any possible charges against the homeowner.

If he has broken window and is attempting to enter but isn't actually inside, or has forced a door open I'm not waiting to let him enter and possibly use cover in the house to engage me.I feel at that point he has made his intentions clear and i will act accordingly. :fire

And once again, what about those charges against the intruder???

If they (intruder) were unsuccessful in gaining entry "one way" and was around "outside the structure" "possibly" looking for another way to gain entry "illegally"???

If it takes more than 30 seconds for that Tarrant County DA to figure that one out...That needs to be handled in the usual way here in November...

Just my take on it...

At what point should a homeowner be allowed to shoot an intruder?
* As soon as the intruder is on the homeowner's property
* As soon as the intruder attempts to break in
* As soon as the intruder is inside
* Never

Where is the choice for "As soon as the homeowner felt there was an imminent threat of injury or death to himself or his family?" Depending on the situation, all four answers could be appropriate.
