WASHINGTON -- A crackdown on guns is under way in the District. Police are asking residents to submit to voluntary searches in exchange for amnesty under the District's gun ban.
The program is starting in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of southeast Washington on Monday and will later expand to other neighborhoods.
Officers will go door to door asking residents for permission to search their homes.
Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the "safe homes initiative" is aimed at residents who want to cooperate with police. She gave the example of parents or grandparents who know or suspect their children have guns in the home.
If weapons are recovered, they will be tested and destroyed if they are not found to be linked to any other crimes

The D.C Gestapo is at it in full force. Man, is this going to stir up the hornets nest. Unbelievable!
I can tell you I would not volunteer anything. If they took my Diamondback nickle snubbie and destroyed it they would be paying
WAY more than any collector pays for them now.

I find this action to be VERY offensive, it even smells like a bit (read 99.9%) desperation. The gun ban has been struck down, but is allowed to continue while the Supreme Court hears the DC's appeal. Its kinda like a couple of kids saying "We better steal all the candy we can before they put the security cameras in." I don't know about you, but to me this is very very wrong, and goes against the spirit of the earlier court rulings.

I agree, I just wish this would get more attention to put the heat on D.C. for doing something like this. i find it completely unacceptable.

Could the lawyer for Heller request an injunction until the ruling is handed down?

You have to wonder if there would be any repercussions if the homeowner said, "No, officer, you do not have permission to search my house."
I'm waiting for the news report on that scenario.

Yeah, and "taking names" and "making notes" if they don't.
They must have gotten this idea from Janet Reno.

"I'm sorry officer, but I can't allow you to search my property without a warrant or probable cause. Since it seems you have neither, have a nice day."
