So, I have dilligently aquired a gun every month since I began collecting. This is primarily because of the signifigant risk of either the muslim apostate, or the female anti-christ get elected. That being said, I'd love a $2,000 AR15, but I don't have the budget for it. I know people harp on the importantance of MIL SPEC, but is it that important? I want something durable, rugged to last decades, and reliable. I'm not going to fight in a war in Iraq with it. (besides, I'd use my AK if I were )

I've been looking at Stag, and S&W MP-15. I'm not a big S&W fan generally, but they rank considerably higher on MILSPEC than stag, and only 50 bucks more cost. Any recommendations?

Lots of good info here. It's intended for LEO types but some of it applies to the occasional plinker and collector too.

And it looks like the CMMG is one to strongly consider.

I looked at cmmg website and they have a lot of bargain bin guns that were built from used parts,but for that price if something needs changed it's a great start $585 shipped isn't bad and if you ever wanta change a barrel or trigger or sumpin else there are members on here that could help you with that

I don't know beans about AR-15s either, but also want to obtain one sooner or later. I ran across this one awhile back, supposed to be the model acquiared by the Texas DPS (something like 3400 of them, I think);

CMMG is one of the best made AR's IMHO-- they extend and polish all of their feed ramps, which is good. I have 2 carbines with CMMG uppers and both of them are 1" MOA shooters w/ irons.

Dont fall for Century Arms AR's they are trying to pawn off on folks for Mil-Spec--they are $500. If you want quality, do yourself a favor and drop the dough, you will not regret it if you need it.

The S&W M&P is a good AR platform, I can attest to mine at least. The question is, do you want cheap or do you want good? Nothing good is cheap, and cheap is usually not good and/or won't last. And if you get the AR bug, even if you start with an $800 carbine you'll spend $2,000 really quickly if you add optics, do any modifications to improve accuracy, add some bells & whistles and all that.

So my advice would be to find one that you believe to be what you're looking for and buy it, ignore the price. If you buy el-cheapo you'll always kick yourself for saving $50 or $100. Just my 2 cents.

Save up a bit more and try to get a RRA Elite (midlength). Oh, and don't try to put one together. It's better to get it straight from the factory.

It's probably running about $900 these days, if you can find them in stock. Go chrome or go home. Make sure to get it chrome lined. I don't think chrome is a standard feature on RRAs for some reason (unlike Bushmaster).

The midlength gas system is the best gas system for the AR...period. I took a 1500 round rifle class just last weekend and my midlength didn't have a single failure. I tried to argue with a former SEAL/security contractor at the class and he gave me a look and asked me what part of "period" I didn't understand. I wanted to argue with him and see if the rifle length AR (what it was designed for) was better than the middy and it obviously isn't.

I disagree. A Honda Civic is more reliable than some cars that cost twice as much.

$800 is plenty to get a good, reliable AR-15. It's even enough to get a good, reliable NIB AR-15.

I know it's a bit far from you but there's been a dealer at the gun shows in DFW that is selling Rock River Arms A4 Carbines with extras for $850 out the door.

Well, I think I have decided on CMMG. I've not found anyone with a bad think to say about them. But where did you find 585?
I would certainly take some upgrades from there, but I found most everything from 900-1000 range.

These guys sell everything but the stripped lower receiver. It appears you can get a kit for around $600 then add a $125 lower receiver.

I stopped by the table of the Model 1 Sales guns. They offer a nice selection at a great price, but their quality still doesn't beat a CMMG. They only chrome moly the barrels. Feed ramps are hit or miss on extension. Barrels are only 4140(4150 is preferred).
Over all, you could pick up a stainless steel 16" kit, do your own ramps, and have a nice setup. With their "kits", you get everything but the lower(stripped). They give you everything else. Trigger, pins, grip, stock, buffer. Everything you need to drop into a stripped lower of your choice. Then just join the halves, and have at it.

After seeing Model1's selection, and wanting to make a good choice on my first AR(I'm gonna build), I think CMMG is the way to go for me. They've got great prices and everything to the spec I'm looking for (basically everything in that first forum article, very informative!) And he's right, CMMG has all the "bells" he mentions.
