Ban on samurai swords becomes law

Legislation against selling, making, hiring or importing samurai swords in England and Wales has come into force.

Those breaking the law face six months in jail and a £5,000 fine. Carrying a sword in public is already illegal.

Exemptions will cover swords which are used for re-enactments or antique weapons kept on display by collectors.

Eight years ago a councillor was killed by a man wielding a samurai sword in the office of Cheltenham Liberal Democrat MP Nigel Jones.

Anyone found guilty of importing samurai swords will face up to seven years in prison and an unlimited fine.

Next on the agenda: butterknife and long fingernail control. :waiting:

soon.... :banghead:

Sergeant: Huh! 'Flu, eh? They should eat more fresh fruit. Ha. Right. Now, self-defence. Tonight I shall be carrying on from where we got to last week when I was showing you how to defend yourselves against anyone who attacks you with armed with a piece of fresh fruit.

(Grumbles from all)

2nd Man: Oh, you promised you wouldn't do fruit this week.

Sergeant: What do you mean?

3rd Man: We've done fruit the last nine weeks.

Sergeant: What's wrong with fruit? You think you know it all, eh?

2nd Man: Can't we do something else?

3rd Man: Like someone who attacks you with a pointed stick?

Sergeant: Pointed stick? Oh, oh, oh. We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we? Getting all high and mighty, eh? Fresh fruit not good enough for you eh? Well I'll tell you something my lad. When you're walking home tonight and some great homicidal maniac comes after you with a bunch of loganberries, don't come crying to me! Now, the passion fruit. When your assailant lunges at you with a passion fruit...

Good one! In fact, that whole, short script, old as it is, seems more pertinent now than it did back in the 70s: http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_scripts/fruit.asp.

I wonder if Wales will issue a Concealed Tiger License...

Funny thing about the Monty Python sketch is that the Sgt. actually shoots the man who attacks him with (I think it was) a banana.

They need to outlaw whatever it is they are taking with their warm beer over there. Whats next, sticks and stones? I heard they had already outlawed sharp pointed knives due to the increase in stabbings, but really, how many bad guys can there be out there playing ninja with swords?

Wet noodles leave whip marks as well, we should ban those tasty instruments of pain! ;-)

John Farnam (Defense Training International) sends out periodic emails he calls his "quips"; kind of an email blog. I just had to share part of the one that came in early this morning:
This from a LEO friend in the UK: "In the UK, when an officer displays the slightest interest in firearms, he is automatically disqualified from all armed assignments. In addition, his career is toast at that point, as knowledge of firearms, let alone shooting and gun-handling skills, constitutes a permanent bar to promotion. One of our officers, who was armed, was subsequently disarmed (removed from our Armed-Police Group) because of his 'unhealthy interest' in developing individual skill with weapons!"

And to think these are the same people who once had an empire that spanned the globe.

Not being up to speed on UK Government, I suspect that at some time in their past, they elected a Democrat as Prime Minister.

Doncha know that Winston Churchill is spinnin' in his grave? He who used to like to pose for photos with a stogie sticking out the side of his mouth, and a Thompson machine gun in his hands.

The biggest legislative blows to UK arms ownership came in 1988, under Margaret Thatcher as PM, and in 1997, the biggest hit, the Firearms Amendment No. 2, Act of 1997, the one that essentially did away with private handgun ownership was legislation introduced by--believe it or not--Tony Blair's Labour Party administration. It was, in fact, the first significant piece of legislation that passed under Blair as Prime Minister.

I read once that in New York City, more people are killed by being pushed from a window than with guns.

I wonder if that is the same for the UK?

Or maybe there, they don't die. The "recover" from their head injuries and go on to be politicians. :anamatedbanana
